SHAWNEE, OK: The 16th ranked Texas Wesleyan University men's soccer team (8-2-1, 2-1 SAC) suffered its first Sooner Athletic Conference loss with a 1-0 defeat at the hands of St. Gregory's University (5-3, 1-1) on Saturday.
After the teams battled to a scoreless draw through the opening half, the game came down to a penalty kick in the 66th minute. Stephen Cummins converted the penalty and SGU snared a 1-0 lead. The Rams got three more looks at the goal from that point but could not find the equalizer.
For the game, St. Gregory's outshot Texas Wesleyan 19-8 including 6-2 on goal. The Cavaliers took six corner kicks compared to just one for the Rams. Texas Wesleyan did not get any help on the road as they were tagged with 22 fouls and a caution while the Cavs were whistled for 10 fouls and no cautions.
Arnold Martinez made five saves in the loss, while SGU's Brock Vorwald made two stops to notch the shutout.
Texas Wesleyan will return to action on Saturday, when they host Southwestern Christian University in their Pink Out game to support breast cancer research. That game is scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. start at Martin Field.
