SHAWNEE, OK: The Texas Wesleyan University women's soccer team (6-1-2) took its first Sooner Athletic Conference victory on Saturday. The third time proved to be a charm after opening conference play with a tie and a loss, the Rams improved to 1-1-1 in SAC competition with a 3-0 win at St. Gregory's University (5-3-1, 0-2 SAC).
Jessica Watton gave the Rams an early lead when she knocked in a corner kick from
Allison Walsh at the six minute mark. The Lady Rams held a commanding 14-3 advantage in shots and 4-0 in corner kicks in the first half, but the score remained just 1-0 at the intermission.
In the second half, the Rams knocked in an efficient two of three shots on goal.
Alexis Michaelkovich scored off an assist from
Sabina Obidinski in the 70th minute. Five minutes later Michaelkovich pushed the score to a comfortable 3-0 when she headed in a cross from
Brianna Wilson.
For the game, the Rams outshot the Cavaliers 22-6 including 7-0 on goal.
Nikki Lockwood did not need a save to record her fifth shutout of the season. St. Gregory's Haylee Merrill came up with four saves for the Cavaliers.
"It was good to get the first conference win under our belt," commented head coach Josh Gibbs. "It should have happened much sooner, but I am pleased with the performance and the effort from the players today. I felt we were dominant in all phases of the game. The girls really played a complete game today and deserved the win."
The Lady Rams will return to action on Tuesday, when they host Howard Payne University. That game is scheduled for a 6:00 p.m. start at Martin Field.
