Pioneers Get Past Lady Rams

PLAINVIEW, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University volleyball team (16-17, 8-5 SAC) dropped a 3-1 (25-11, 23-25, 25-16, 25-22) match to #17 Wayland Baptist University (26-5, 11-2 SAC) at the Hutcherson Center on Friday Night.
 
The Pioneers took a 5-1 lead to start the first set, but the Rams fought back to get with two points at 8-6 with an Alex Hendee kill.  Wayland sprinted out to an 8-0 run for a 16-6 lead, but was stopped by another Hendee kill. The Pioneers kept the pressure on though, as back to back Chelsey Driskill kills made it 23-9, to go on to take a 25-11 first set.
 
The Lady Rams took a second set rally to lead 8-1 capped by a Meghan Finley kill. A Lauren Hutchinson service ace gave Wesleyan a six point, 11-5 lead. Wayland Baptist dug in and chipped away at the lead with a Claire Jacobsma kill, making it 16-15. Texas Wesleyan responded with a 4-1 run capped by another Hendee kill for a small 20-16 lead. An Abigail Zipoy kill kept the Rams with a four-point lead at 22-18 late in the set. The Pioneers played optimistically with the deficit, coming back to bring the game within one at 24-23 after a Lady Ram error. Texas Wesleyan head coach Kimberly Weaver took a time out to adjust and collect her team. Out of the timeout the Pioneers conceded the set with an attack error to give the Rams a 25-23 win, tying the match 1-1.
 
The Pioneers went on 6-0 rally to grab an 11-4 lead, capped by a Wesleyan error. Wayland Baptist outscored the Lady Rams 2-1 for a spell to extend their lead to 21-12, as the Wesleyan errors kept them from digging themselves out of the nine-point hole. Shahala Hawkins stopped any chance for a Lady Ram comeback with a kill to take the third set 25-16.
 
In a tightly contested fourth set, the two teams played consistently sharp in the early goings. Wayland Baptist kept a slight one point advantage to start until Texas Wesleyan tied the game 8-8 with a Stephanie Dominguez ace. The Pioneer went on a 5-0 run to get some breathing room at 13-8. Another Lady Ram ace, this time from Katherine Rosenbusch, brought Wesleyan within one point at 20-19. Wayland Baptist pulled away with a 3-0 run capped by a Grecia Rivera kill for a 23-19 Pioneer lead. A Driskill kill made it match point, and despite two Pioneer errors in the next two plays, a Jacobsma kill finished the set 25-22 for a 3-1 match win.
 
Hendee led the charge for the Rams with 10 kills and three aces. Dominguez notched a double-double with 22 assists and 14 digs. Hutchinson tallied 21digs in the loss.
 
The Lady Rams will come home to play St. Gregory’s University on Tuesday, November 5. First serve set for 7:00 pm at the Sid Richardson Center.
