FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University men's soccer team (13-6-1) ended their tournament run with a 1-0 loss to St. Gregory's University (10-7-1) in the semi-final match of the 2013 Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament at Martin Field on Monday.
Â
The two teams were very focused before the game, with not much laughter or smiles leading up to game time. St. Gregory's and Texas Wesleyan each had determination and preparation concreted on their face as the starting lineups were announced and the Star Spangled Banner played, everyone remembering our Veterans who have served and continue to protect our nation.
Â
The two teams played as even as Martin Field has seen all year, with Wesleyan controlling the ball slightly more than the opposing squad. The Cavaliers got the first shot off, a header by Greg Keogh off of a free kick that went high above the goal. The Rams answered with an
Ivan Kovacevic shot collected by Cav keeper Brock Vorwald. Shortly after, a Kovacevic corner kick found the head of
Edvaldo Pedro, but the ball sneaked just right of the goal.
Â
Later in the half, an absurd no offside call allowed Mark McGrath to get off what basically added up to a free shot for the Cavaliers.
Arturo Sanchez was not about to let a bad call from the linesman dictate the match though, sprinting toward the ball and lying out horizontally, sacrificing his body to make the heads-up save. Â Sanchez picked up another fantastic save on a shot by McGrath. Ivan Kovacevic got off another blast near the end of the half, but Vorwald was able to get a touch on it to redirect it away from goal.
Â
The two teams finished the half with a nil-nil tie. Fouls were balanced at four apiece. Shots on goal were as well at 2-2. The Rams outshot the Cavs 6-3.
Â
The Cavaliers caught the Rams off guard to start the second half, as Mark Dunleavy crossed the ball to Stephen Cummins who was able to knock it past Sanchez in the 46th minute for a 1-0 lead. McGrath had another one on one in the 56th, but Sanchez kept the Rams from going down two goals with a masterful save.
Â
The Rams had chances, their best being a header by
Max O'Shea off of a corner kick that rebounded off the keeper to the foot of
Marin Kovacevic who took a swing but was blocked to deny the Wesleyan charge. Texas Wesleyan got one more shot that would have been an equalizing goal with seconds to go, but another highly questionable offside call retracted the shot, allowing the Cavaliers to run out the clock and narrowly escape the Rams.
Â
Wesleyan outshot the Cavs 14-9, with shots on goal 6-3 advantage to St. Gregory's. Sanchez had five saves in the match. Corners were 3-2 TWU, and fouls were 10-9 Rams.
Â
Head Coach Tyler Powell was proud of the season his team produced, "I would like to thank the players, staff, and administration for all of their continued efforts. A big thanks goes to our four seniors, Ivan [Kovacevic], Ross
[DeWet],David
[Hagen], and Hector
[Vargas]. It is disappointing to lose any game, but I feel like everyone left it on the field today. We gave everything we had but it wasn't enough today. This team has a lot to be proud of from our overall record, to making it this far in the conference tournament, and to reaching their highest ranking in program history. Everything was earned and nothing was given."
