FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University men's soccer team (13-5-1) took a decisive 3-0 win over Oklahoma City University (8-8-2) in Sooner Athletic Conference quarterfinal action at Martin Field on Saturday.
The Rams came out of the gate quickly. In the seventh minute,
Alexander Ellis put in some great work on the near left side and got the ball to
Max O'Shea in front of the goal. O'Shea finished, and the Rams held an early 1-0 lead. In the 12th minute,
Denis Ushakov put the Stars under duress, but Joe Shulberg made a terrific save to keep his team within a goal.
Shulberg made four saves in the first half while TWU's
Arturo Sanchez made three stops, and the game reached the intermission at 1-0.
Seven minutes into the second half, the Rams struck again.
Ivan Kovacevic played a ball into the box, and
David Hagen headed the ball in for his fifth goal of the season. Ellis and O'Shea connected again in the 76th minute to put the game out of reach at 3-0.
For the game, Texas Wesleyan outshot Oklahoma City 16-13 including 8-6 on goal. The Stars held a 6-2 advantage in corner kick opportunities and benefitted from a 21-7 foul count.
Shulberg finished with five saves. Sanchez (5-1) made six saves for the Rams.
With the win, Texas Wesleyan advances to Monday's semifinal round. The third seeded Rams will host seventh seeded St. Gregory's University (9-7-1) at 7:00 p.m. The Cavaliers upset second seeded Wayland Baptist 1-0 on Saturday.
