FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University volleyball team (18-17, 10-6 SAC) flew past cross town rival Southwestern Assemblies of God University (15-15, 8-8 SAC) with a 3-1 (25-21, 25-17, 28-30, 25-21) conference win on senior night Friday.
Before the match, the Lady Rams honored three outstanding seniors for the hard work and commitment to the volleyball program.
Stephanie Dominguez,
Lauren Hutchinson, and
Katherine Rosenbusch are responsible for 66 wins and eight All-Conference selections, with more awards certain to come at seasons end.
The Lady Rams controlled the first set from the start, as the Lady Lions seemed to be on their heels falling behind 5-0.
Alex Hendee led the charge with two service aces in the rally. The run continued and after an
Abigail Zipoy kill Wesleyan led 11-2. SAGU went on an 8-1 later in the set to tie the game at 19-19, capped by a Jessica Sodich kill. The Lady Rams got back on track to take set point with a Rosenbusch kill winning 25-22.
Texas Wesleyan got out to 7-2 lead in the second set capped a Hendee kill that forced a Lady Lions timeout. The Rams went on a 6-1 run to extend the lead to a 17-8 advantage. A
Starnisha Bodie kill late in the set sparked a 4-0 run to take the second set, 25-17.
The third set was one of the most competitive, exciting games all season. Texas Wesleyan got out to an early 8-3 lead on a Hendee kill making SAGU burn a timeout. The Lions fought back and made it 13-11 with an Alissa Kirk ace. Texas Wesleyan held a small lead until a Kassy Cox kill tied the game at 19-19. The two teams fought and it seemed like the Lady Rams were poised to take the match after a Rosenbusch kill made it match point at 24-22, but the Lions came back to tie the set at 24-24 with a Taylor Calverly ace. What ensued from there was some of the most nerve wracking volleyball to be played in the Sid Richardson Gymnasium in a long time. Both teams took turns holding set point with the other tying the game in response. This went on for what seemed like a whole other set, but a Faith Hardin kill and a Lady Ram error gave the Lady Lions the set, 30-28.
The Lady Rams refocused and got back on point in the fourth set. After a Hutchinson ace made it 4-0, Wesleyan extended the lead to 7-2 after a couple SAGU errors. The Lady Lions went on a 5-2 run to cut the lead to 9-7. A
Meghan Finley kill got the Rams back out to a five-point 12-7 lead. The Lady Lions threatened, but Wesleyan shut the door every time. A Zipoy kill ended the night as the Rams took the set 25-21.
Head Coach Kimberly Weaver praised her seniors after the win, “Tonight was a perfect display of the growth we have experienced as a team this season. It was very fitting that it also happened to be senior night. Katie [Rosenbusch], Steph [Dominguez], and Hutch [Hutchinson] have been a part of every good thing that we have experienced. We are better because of their leadership, maturity, and high skill level. It has been an honor to coach them. Thankfully, we aren’t finished. We are looking to carry this momentum with us into the conference tournament next weekend.”
Rosenbusch led the Lady Rams with 16 kills and four block assists. Hutchinson led all players with 36 digs and four aces. Dominguez had 24 assists, eight digs and added a kill in the match. Zipoy notched a double-double with 13 kills and 16 digs.
Lauren Hamaker tallied 30 assists in the win.
The Lady Rams will take the third seed in the 2013 Sooner Athletic Conference Volleyball Tournament starting on Friday, November 15.
