Lady Rams Handle Bulldogs

WAXAHACHIE, TX:  The Texas Wesleyan University women's basketball team (2-2) took a 66-54 win over McPherson College (1-4) at the SAGU Classic on Saturday.
 
The Lady Rams came out firing and never trailed in the game.  Takoia Larry hit a three, got a steal, and converted a layup to start the game.  The Rams quickly pushed ahead 10-2.  Larry (15) and Kayla McCray (8) combined to pour in 23 points in the first half, and the Lady Rams led 39-32 at the break.
 
McPherson made a brief push in the second half, using a 6-0 run to cut the score to 56-50.  However, the Rams responded with eight unanswered points to stretch the lead out to 14 points on their way to the 66-54 win.
 
The Bulldogs outshot the Rams 36%-35% and held a slim 43-41 rebounding margin.  The Lady Rams forced 27 turnovers and led 26-16 in points off of turnovers.  Texas Wesleyan also led 14-4 in second chance points and 12-4 on the fast break.
 
Larry led the way with 19 points to go with seven rebounds, five assists, and four steals.  McCray added 13 points.  Kashay Barnes filled the stat sheet with nine points, seven rebounds, six assists, and three steals.
 
The Bulldogs were led by Sunny Smart's 12 points and eight rebounds.  Bailey Brown added a double-double with 10 points and 10 boards.
 
"This was a nice win today," commented head coach Bill Franey.  "It is a good step forward as we continue to jell into a cohesive team."
 
The Rams will return to action on Tuesday, when they travel to Marshall, TX, to take on Wiley College.  That game is scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. start.
