Lady Rams Slip In SAC Opener

Box Score

FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University women's basketball team (3-5, 0-1 SAC) dropped the conference home opener 76-67 to Mid-America Christian University (7-1, 1-0 SAC) at the Sid Richardson Center on Wednesday.

The Lady Rams opened the contest with 10-2 run, capped by a Kayla McCray layup. The Lady Evangels caught up to make it a one-point, 15-14 game after a three pointer from Cheyenne Been midway through the first half. Texas Wesleyan kept a slight margin throughout most of the first half, as the foul happy Evangels put the Lady Rams in the bonus very early. A knock down jumper by ToiEasha Cooper kept Wesleyan in front 31-26 and two free throw shots by Takoia Larry got the lead to 33-26, before things went sour for the Rams. MACU found a spark, scoring 13 unanswered points in three minutes to close the half, taking a 39-33 lead.

It felt like the Lady Evangels knew everything the Lady Rams were about to do, as the woes continued for Wesleyan in the second half. The fast, scrappy Evangels were all over the court, forcing the Lady Rams into 30 turnovers throughout the game. MACU led by as many as 20 at 68-48 with 6:31 remaining. Texas Wesleyan cut the lead to a seven-point 72-65 deficit, but the Lady Evangels finished the game to take the 76-67 win.

Despite shooting 48 percent from the field and out-rebounding the Evangels 43-38, the Lady Rams lost by nine points, largely due to the high amount of turnovers committed. MACU outscored TWU 21-8 out of the fast break, 29-12 off turnovers, and 52-8 off the bench.

Larry led the Rams with double-double, knocking down 17 points, while collecting 14 rebounds. Cooper tallied a double-double as well with 11 points and 10 boards. McCray notched 12 points, eight rebounds. Kashay Barnes put up 15 points and six assists.

The Lady Rams will travel to Shawnee, OK to take on Oklahoma Baptist University on Saturday, December 7. Tip-off is set for a 1:00 pm start.
