Lady Rams Tame Lady Lions, 72-56

FORT WORTH, Texas – Takoia Larry scored a career-high 30 points as the Texas Wesleyan women’s basketball team defeated Langston University (8-14, 8-9 RRAC), 72-56 for a homecoming victory inside the Sid Richardson Center on Saturday afternoon. Larry also had seven rebounds in the game.
 
The Lady Rams (18-7, 13-5 RRAC) extended their winning streak to six games with the victory over the Lady Lions, which also marks the fifth straight win over Langston.
 
Both teams battled within the opening minutes of the first period, but the Lady Rams took full control and never trailed after the 18-minute mark in the first half. The squad held their largest lead of the first half after Toieasha Cooper hit a jumper to give the Lady Rams a 16-point advantage at 30-14 with 7:26 remaining before the half. Cooper tallied up 18 points and seven rebounds in the game.
 
The Lady Lions fought their way through the deficit by going on a 13-4 run to cut the deficit to seven at 34-27 with 3:36 remaining before halftime. The Lady Rams pushed the lead back to double-digits to enter the half with a 15-point lead at 43-28.
 
The Lady Rams led by double-digits the entire second period. Their largest lead came at the 7:48 mark in the second half after Cooper connected on a jumper to give Texas Wesleyan a 24-point advantage at 65-41.
 
The Lady Rams shot 55.3 percent from the field and 85.7 percent from beyond the arc. Texas Wesleyan also out-rebounded Langston 32-22.
 
Kayla McCray scored in double-digits with 10 points in the game. McCray also had two rebounds and three assists.
 
“This was an excellent team victory with major contributions by everyone,” said head coach Bill Franey. “It was fun to see the girls play hard and execute against a determined Langston team.
 
Texas Wesleyan will return to action on Monday, February 11th when the Lady Rams host Bacone College (6-14, 4-11 RRAC) at the Sid Richardson Center. The game will be a “pink out” in honor for cancer awareness. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
