Lady Rams Split In Opener At OBU Tournament

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SHAWNEE, OK: The Texas Wesleyan University volleyball team (1-1) started the season with a split of a pair of matches in day one of the Oklahoma Baptist Tournament at the Noble Complex on Friday. The Lady Rams won 3-0 (26-24, 25-16, 25-12) against the University of St. Thomas-Houston before dropping a 3-0 (27-25, 25-17, 25-22) match to the College of the Ozarks (1-0).
 
The Lady Rams made short work of the Lady Celts in their first regular season match after a close first set. St. Thomas made an 8-0 run to take a commanding 20-10 lead. The Lady Rams came charging back with a 7-0 run to make it 20-17 capped by a Meghan Finley kill, and another major run to steal the lead and take a 26-24 win.
 
Wesleyan dominated in the second and third sets, with Abi Zipoy leading the Rams with the last two kills to seal the 25-16 win.  The Lady Rams really flexed their muscles in the second set with 17 kills and a .519 hitting percentage.
 
In the third set, the Rams held the Celts to only five kills and a .045 hitting percentage, while taking 14 kills themselves. Katherine Rosenbusch ended the match with her sixth kill of the game to take a 25-12 third set win.
 
Rosenbusch led the Wesleyan with 14 kills, three solo blocks and a block assist. Alex Hendee added 10 kills and 12 digs in the match.  Zipoy notched eight kills and 10 digs for the Lady Rams. Finley tallied eight kills. Stephanie Dominguez kept the offense organized with 28 assists
 
College of the Ozarks came in the match currently receiving votes in the NAIA Top  25 polls, and the upper classman heavy Lady Bobcats showed it.
 
 While the Lady Rams challenged the veteran lineup, the Lady Bobcats took the 27-25 first set edge.  Wesleyan went on a 4-0 run late capped by a Zipoy kill to tie the game at 22-22. The Lady Rams tied the game again at 24 apiece off of a Rosenbusch kill, and again at 25 all from another Zipoy throw down, but the bobcat narrowly escaped with a 27-25 set one win.
 
Texas Wesleyan held slight lead in the second set at 13-12 from a Rosenbusch kill, but the Lady Bobcats 10-2 run to take game two 25-17. The third set was another close one after errors on both sides of the net gave each team a breathable window. The Rams held a 20-16 lead after back to back Bobcat errors. Then three Ram errors later College of the Ozarks led 21-20. Starnisha Bodie tied the game with a kill in the next volley, but the Lady Bobcats finished off the Lady Rams 25-22 in three fairly close games.
 
Zipoy led the Rams with 11 kills to go along with 13 digs. Rosenbusch had 10 kills with a .500 hitting percentage in the match. Dominguez offered 24 assists, while Lauren Hutchinson tallied 16 digs for Texas Wesleyan.
 
The Lady Rams will continue in day two of the Oklahoma Baptist Tournament with matches against former RRAC opponents Wiley College at 9:00 am and Texas College at 2:00 pm.
