Box Score

FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University men's soccer team (5-0) celebrated Hometown Heroes night at Martin Field with a 3-0 win over the University of St. Thomas Houston (2-2-1) on Wednesday.

The game, featuring two teams who were receiving votes in the latest NAIA National Coaches' Poll, was attended by members of the Fort Worth Fire Department. The firefighters joined both teams on the field prior to the match for a moment of silence in honor of September 11.

In the 21st minute, Ivan Kovacevic took a shot from the top of the box that rebounded off of UST goalkeeper Jason Teffet. Denis Ushakov was there to clean up the mess and score the game's first goal. In the 44th minute, Kovacevic played a corner kick into the box and Abdi Mahdi headed the ball in to make it 2-0 heading into the break.

Ushakov added another goal in the 58th minute, this time on an assist from Alejandro Rivas, to push the score to 3-0.

For the game, the Rams outshot the Celts 17-9, including an 11-3 margin in the first half. The Rams put seven shots on target and scored three of them. The Celts mustered four shots on goal and Arnold Martinez (4-0) stopped all four to preserve his second shutout of the season.

The Rams were whistled for 15 fouls compared to 11 for the Celts. Neither team received a caution.

The Rams will return to action on Friday, when they travel to Batesville, AR, to take on Lyon College. That game is scheduled for a 4:00 p.m. start.
