Oletha, KS: The Texas Wesleyan University volleyball team (7-8) took a 3-1 (23-25, 25-23, 25-21, 25-18) match from Benedictine College (3-10), before dropping a match 3-0 (26-24, 25-23, 25-22) to Grand View University (5-6) at the Mid-America Nazarene University Tournament on Friday.
After falling in a close first set, the Lady Rams won three straight close sets to get yet another road win. Texas Wesleyan played from behind in the first set, but kept finding ways to tie, and even go ahead as a
Katherine Rosenbusch kill gave the Lady Rams a 21-20 lead late. The Lady Ravens used a 5-1 run to take the game as the Lady Rams dropped the set.
The Lady Rams found themselves down 22-19 late in the second set on the verge of going down 2-0 against the Ravens. Texas Wesleyan found a way to escape with kills from
Courtney Shirey,
Starnisha Bodie, and
Meghan Finley, while using a couple Raven errors to come back and win 25-23.
The Lady Rams got an early lead in the third set to take control, and Shirey made it game point with a kill, leading the Rams to a 25-21 third set.
Texas Wesleyan had all the momentum in the fourth set, and the Ravens could not get back in the contest as the Rams take the early game in the tournament.
Shirey led all players with 12 kills, a career high for the 5-7 sophomore from Keller, TX. Alex Hendee had an efficient match with 9 kills, a pair of service aces, and two block assists.
Stephanie Dominguez tallied 33 assists in the win.
Grandview came into their match with Wesleyan at 4-6, but has played six ranked opponents or opponents receiving votes including No. 3 Texas-Brownsville and No. 7 Georgetown College.
It was another tightly contested match, and although the Lady Rams got down 18-15 in the first set, Wesleyan tied the game at 24-24 with a Shirey kill. The Lady Vikings squeaked by though, taking a 26-24 win.
The second set found the Lady Rams with a 14-10 lead until the Lady Vikings battled back to tie the game at 19-19. The Vikings went on to complete a 6-0 on their way to a 25-23 win.
The Lady Rams definitely had good things going in each of the first two sets, and the third was no exception. Wesleyan jumped out to a 7-2 lead on a Hendee kill. The Vikings then rallied off an 8-0 run to take a 10-7 lead. The Rams played close catch up from there, but catch up nonetheless and drop the match to Grand View.
Lauren Hutchinson led all players with 29 digs in the match. Hendee had 11 kills. Dominguez placed 21 assists in the loss.
The Lady Rams continue with day two of the tournament tomorrow, playing Evangel University at noon before taking on Northwestern College at 2:00 pm.
