Box Score 2 OLETHA, KS: The Texas Wesleyan University volleyball team (7-10) took a pair very hard fought losses to Evangel University (7-9) 3-0 (25-22, 25-17, 25-21) and No. 12 Northwestern College (IA) (16-1) in five sets (25-22, 21-25, 25-19, 21-25, 15-10) in the last day of the Mid-America Nazarene Tournament
The Rams were on the wrong end of another hard fought match. Evangel spread the ball around well enough to keep the Lady Rams on their heels just enough to keep momentum and take three sets. None of the Evangel hitters had more the six kills, but nine players were in the kill column.
Alex Hendee notched 14 kills in the match.
Katherine Rosenbusch had nine kills.
Lauren Hutchinson had 19 digs for the Lady Rams, while
Stephanie Dominguez tallied 35 assists and nine digs in the loss.
The Lady Rams then threatened to upset the twelfth ranked team in the nation in Northwester College of Iowa. The Lady Rams continued to stick around in every set as the Lady Red Raiders just edged a first set win with a timely timeout taken to subdue a Lady Ram comeback.
The Lady Rams took advantage of a 5-1 lead to start the game and never let the Red Raiders back in the game as Hendee made it set point with a kill and a Northwestern service error gave the Rams the second set 25-21.
The momentum was swinging in the third set as Wesleyan got up early again on Northwestern, but the Lady Red Raiders fought back to take the lead. Northwestern made a few small runs to get ahead enough to squash another Ram comeback.
Texas Wesleyan was poised in the fourth set as
Abigail Zipoy put the Rams up 17-10, and eventually ended the set with another kill to force a fifth set.
The Lady Rams started ahead early once again, but the Lady Red Raiders found enough to squander the upset and seal a 15-10 fifth set, 3-2 match win.
Rosenbusch led the Rams with 17 kills. Hendee added 16 kills in the effort.
Lauren Hamaker tallied 28 assists, while Hutchinson had 21 digs for Wesleyan.
The Lady Rams will play their first ever Sooner Athletic Conference match against Southwestern Christian University in Bethany, OK on Thursday, September 19 starting at 7:00 pm.
