Lady Rams Play Knights to Draw

Box Score

FORT WORTH, TX:  The 22nd ranked Texas Wesleyan University women's soccer team (5-0-2, 0-0-1 SAC) met rival Northwood University (3-2-1, 0-0-1) in what was the first ever Sooner Athletic Conference contest for both schools on Friday.  After two overtime periods, the two teams battled to a 1-1 draw.

Northwood controlled the play early.  The Knights took the first three shots of the game, but the Lady Rams allowed just one more shot in the half.  In the 41st minute, the Rams finally found the back of the net.  Alexis Michaelkovich played a corner kick into the box and Jessica Watton was there for her seventh goal of the season.

Texas Wesleyan led 13-4 in shots and 4-0 in corner kicks in the first half.  Northwood turned the tables with a 10-2 advantage in shots in the second half.  In the 57th minute, Karyn Forbes scored just the second goal by a Wesleyan opponent this season to tie the game at 1-1.

Both teams had opportunities but neither could find the game-winner through 110 minutes and the game ended in a draw.

"This is Wesleyan, Northwood," commented head coach Josh Gibbs.  "I didn't think we played our best, but these games are always going to be tight.  It's going to come down to one play or one mistake every time we get together."

For the game, the Knights led 18-15 in shots, while TWU led 5-2 in corner kicks and 18-14 in fouls.  Nikki Lockwood (5-0-2) and her counterpart Cristin Heilker both made four saves.

The Lady Rams will return to action on Tuesday, when they host Oklahoma Baptist University.  That game is scheduled for a 5:00 p.m. start at Martin Field.
