FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University volleyball team (6-4) dropped a pair of matches on the first day of the Wesleyan Hughes Classic. The Lady Rams suffered 3-0 losses to both Briar Cliff University (8-2) (25-21, 25-18, 25-14) and tenth ranked Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (3-4) (25-11, 25-23, 25-19).
Against Briar Cliff, the Lady Rams could not find their rhythm. Game one saw five ties and three lead changes as the Lady Rams stayed close throughout before falling 25-21. The Chargers held a steady advantage for much of the next two games, winning 25-18 and 25-14.
Katherine Rosenbusch paced Texas Wesleyan with nine kills against just two errors with four block assists.
Stephanie Dominguez and
Lauren Hamaker each had nine assists, while
Lauren Hutchinson came up with nine digs.
The Rams came out of the gate slowly against the Eagles as Embry-Riddle raced to a 25-11 game one win. In game twoTexas Wesleyan pushed the Eagles to the edge before falling 25-23, and in game three ERAU fended off the Wesleyan attack 25-19.
Alex Hendee led the Rams with eight kills while coming up with 10 digs. Hamaker posted 15 assists, and
Meghan Finley recorded the team's lone block.
A strong field from around the nation provided an entertaining first day at the Hughes Classic. Briar Cliff, located in Sioux City, IA, fell in the opening match 3-2 to an undefeated Rocky Mountain College squad out of Billings, MT. The tournament featured the NAIA game of the week when #3 UT-Brownsville squared off with Embry-Riddle. The match did not disappoint as UTB edged the Eagles 3-2. In other action, Rocky Mountain defeated Our Lady of the Lake University (San Antonio, TX) 3-0, UT-Brownsville defeated Lewis-Clark State University (Lewiston, ID) 3-0, and Lewis-Clark topped Our Lady of the Lake 3-0.
Saturday's action begins with UTB vs. Briar Cliff and Embry-Riddle vs. Rocky Mountain at 11:30 a.m. The Lady Rams will play Lewis-Clark at 2:00 p.m. and Our Lady of the Lake at 7:00 p.m.
