Box Score
FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University men's soccer team (3-0) secured a solid 3-1 win over Bethel College (KS) (0-2) at Martin Field on Friday night.
Â
Both squads were hungry for a goal throughout the first half, as the Threshers and Rams battled in their first ever meeting. Bethel and Wesleyan both fired shots, some precise, others fairly ambitious. Bethel keeper Casey Budd made save after save keeping the Threshers in the game.
Â
Arnold Martinez made two spectacular saves to keep the optimistic Bethel offense in check. Despite 16 first half shots the Rams settled for nil-nil heading into the break.
Â
Simply put, the Rams came out in the second half and left the Threshers in the dust. The Rams came out with intensity and exposed the Bethel College back line. The Rams dominated most of the second half and were never threatened by the Threshers as their only goal came on a 3 goal cushion.
Â
Texas Wesleyan scored the first goal in the 46th minute on an
Ivan Kovacevic free kick just outside the left side of the box.
Â
The Rams kept the pressure on and in the 63rd minute Kovacevic directed a corner kick that found the head of
Edvaldo Pedro for a 2-0 lead.
Â
Kovacevic ended the night with a magnificent ball from a long way out that seemed to have eyes, finding the back of the net for his second goal of the night and a 3-0 lead.
Â
Bethel College scored in the 80th minute on a free kick from near mid-field that fooled everyone, taking a bounce before it finally went in for the goal. That would be all the Threshers could muster though, and the Rams take a 3-1 win at Martin Field.
Â
The Rams will play a home match against Southwestern Adventist University on Sunday, September 8 starting a 5:30 pm.
