Rams Best USAO, 80-71

FORT WORTH, TX:  The Texas Wesleyan University men's basketball team (9-6, 3-3 SAC) took an 80-71 win over the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma (5-8, 2-4 SAC) in Sooner Athletic Conference play on Monday.
 
The Rams returned home and found their shooting stroke early.  Jorge Redmon knocked down a pair of three's as the Rams raced out to a 13-3 lead.  USAO pulled within six at 17-11, but the Rams went on a 16-4 run to take their largest lead of the game at 33-15 with 5:32 to play.
 
Texas Wesleyan held USAO to just 34% shooting in the first half and led 41-29 at the intermission.
 
The Rams were maintaining a solid 63-50 lead midway through the second half, when the Drovers made a run.  A steal and fast break layup from USAO's Shavon Scott capped a 12-2 run that made it a single possession game at 65-62 with 6:41 to play.
 
Jervon Hooks responded to the challenge by pouring in 11 points in the last 2:58 of game time.  That effort paced a 15-8 run to close the game for Texas Wesleyan.
 
For the game, the Rams outshot the Drovers 43%-40% from the floor.  Texas Wesleyan was an efficient 8-for-19 (42%) from long range, while USAO hit just 5-of-25 (20%) three-pointers.  The Rams also shot 84% (16-19) at the free throw line, while the Drovers managed just 57% (12-21).  Texas Wesleyan commanded the boards to the tune of 47-36.
 
Head coach Brennen Shingleton was proud of his team's effort.  "We have played a very tough schedule with three games in the last five days.  I'm proud of our team for being tough enough to get better in all of them."
 
Hooks came off the bench to score a team-high 15 points to go with seven assists.  Kenny Rhymes recorded a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.  Deonte Jones posted 14 points.  Rilwan Bakare notched 12 points, and Dallas Jones finished with 10 points for the Rams.
 
The Drovers were led by Jahseth Lloyd's 22 points and eight rebounds.  Scott and Tyler Reynolds finished with 17 and 14 points respectively.
 
The Rams will return to action on Thursday, when they host Wayland Baptist University.  That game is scheduled for an 8:00 p.m. start in the Sid Richardson Center.
