FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University men's basketball team (11-7, 5-4 SAC) took an 86-78 win over Southwestern Christian University (5-12, 1-9 SAC) at the Sid Richardson Center on Saturday.
In the first half, the Rams led by as many as nine points, 28-19, but the Eagles later went on a 12-3 run to tie the game at 34. The Eagles outshot the Rams 45%-40% in the frame and went to the locker room tied at 38.
The Rams posted a much stronger effort in the second half, hitting at a 61.5% clip offensively while holding SCU to just 36% shooting.
The Eagles built their largest lead of the game at 58-55. Midway through the period,
Deonte Jones, who was in early foul trouble, buried his first shot attempt of the night, a three-pointer that put the Rams on top 63-61. The Eagles regained the lead with a three from Austin Turner, but
Vernell Blackman put the Rams ahead for good with an emphatic breakaway jam.
The game remained tight until
Isaiah Jay scored four consecutive points and
Deonte Jones added the exclamation with a fast break dunk that brought the score to 79-72 with 55 seconds to play. The Rams went 5-for-6 at the free throw line in the final minute to come away with the 86-78 win.
For the game, the Rams outshot the Eagles 50%-40% from the field and 41%-28% from long range. The Eagles came away with one more rebound, 37-36, while both teams committed 10 turnovers. Texas Wesleyan held commanding leads in points in the paint (36-26), fast break points (27-11), and bench points (43-11).
Jorge Redmon led all scorers with 27 points.
Dallas Jones added 20 points, seven rebounds, and five assists.
Kenny Rhymes finished with 12 points.
SCU was led by Tyler Turner's 22 points. Adam Dirlbeck posted a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
The Rams will return to action with a home-and-home against Oklahoma Baptist University next week. The teams will square off in Shawnee, OK, on Monday before meeting in the Sid Richardson Center on Thursday.
