Lady Rams Sweep SAGU

WAXAHACHIE, TX:  The Texas Wesleyan University volleyball team (12-16, 8-4 SAC) swept rival Southwestern Assemblies of God University (12-12, 5-6 SAC) in a 3-0 (25-19, 25-15, 25-20) rout on Thursday night.

The Lady Rams held a slight advantage over SAGU in the early goings, taking a 14-10 lead highlighted by a kill crushed by Shelby Stinnett, prompting a timeout by the Lady Lions. A Lynsay Buell kill kept Wesleyan in front with back-to-back kills to make it a 21-15 game. Abigail Zipoy finished the set off on a laser kill for a 25-19 win.

The Lady Lions kept the game close to start the second set, tying the game at 5-5 before a Stinnett kill kept the Rams with a slight advantage. The Lady Rams were unable to build any momentum due to service errors, but finally sparked a 7-0 rally capped by a Buell block to make it a 12-5 game. The Lady Rams did a good job of limiting the errors in the second set, grabbing a 10-point 23-13 lead on a Hendee smash. Buell was able to sneak a tip kill past the triple block attempt of SAGU to win the set 25-15

The Lady Lions had a hard time keeping the ball in the lines, with numerous attacking errors hindering SAGU from gaining any momentum. Another Buell kill made it a 13-8 advantage. Buell stayed lights out with another kill later in the set for a 16-8 lead. Texas Wesleyan stayed red hot, with Alex Hendee putting down the match deciding kill in a 25-20, third set win.

The Lady Rams out hit their opponent 44-26, as SAGU could only manage a .072 hitting percentage against the stifling Ram defense.  Texas Wesleyan hit a balmy .312 in the match.

"Tonight we executed a solid performance from all positions." noted head coach Kimberly Weaver, "Our setters ran a very balanced offense, and our defense played great. Lynsay Buell was unstoppable. Alex (Hendee) and Abby (Zipoy) posted great numbers for us as well. This is exactly what we needed headed into our next match with Oklahoma Baptist."

Zipoy tallied a double-double with 13 kills and 12 digs. Buell was a force, posting 11 kills on zero errors in 17 attempts, a .647 hitting percentage. The senior also posted a pair of solo blocks and two blocks assists in the win. Lauren Hamaker got 22 assists, while Kristina Gafford had 17 assists for the Lady Rams. Shaughnessy Hearn led all players with 16 digs in the match.
Texas Wesleyan will take on Oklahoma Baptist University on Tuesday, October 28 starting at 6:00 pm at the Sid Richardson Center.
