TYLER, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University men's basketball team (1-0) opened the 2014-15 season with a 103-87 win at Texas College (1-1).
The Rams shot 58% from the field in the first half while hitting on 5-of-7 (71.4%) of their long range attempts. That led to a 51-47 advantage at the break.
In the second half, Texas Wesleyan shot 61% from the field, while holding Texas College to 40.7%. That margin allowed the Rams to pull away for the 103-87 win.
For the game, the Rams shot 61% including 6-of-8 from three-point range. The Rams out rebounded TC 33-32 while forcing 12 turnovers and committing 10.
Merv Lindsay led all scorers in his Texas Wesleyan debut with 24 points and seven rebounds.
Sam Akano added 19 points.
Chris Gracela finished with 14 points and
Hasani Sumbry posted 10 points in the win.
Sebastian Opon led the Steers with 17 points. Dexter Cormier scored 14 points, while Roy Shelton and Blake Turner each added 13.
The Rams will return to action on Monday, when they host Paul Quinn College in their home opener. That game is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. start in the Sid Richardson Center.
