Pioneers Squeak By Lady Rams

DENTON, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University women's basketball team (6-3) slipped 70-65 to NCAA DII Texas Woman's University (3-2) at Kitty Magee Arena on Tuesday.
 
The Pioneers sprinted out to an 8-0 lead to start the contest, capped by a three pointer just two and a half minutes in. Texas Wesleyan fought backed with a 10-2 rally capped by a Katelynn Threats jumper to tie the game at 10-10. Kashyla Fields hit a triple to give the Lady Rams a 13-10 lead with 13:26 left in the first half.
 
The Lady Rams held the lead until a 7-0 Pioneer run allowed Texas Woman's to post a 25-19 lead. The Pioneers extended the lead to 35-24 heading into halftime.
 
Texas Woman's protected their cushion into the second half, and led by as many as 17 points at 61-44 Texas Wesleyan enjoyed a 9-2 run capped by a Cheyenne Swoopes shot from downtown to cut the lead to 63-53 with three minutes remaining in regulation. The Lady Rams continued on the comeback trail with an 8-0 rally capped by a Threats lay-in to bring the score to 65-61.
 
The Rams brought cut the lead to 68-65 with 17 seconds remaining, but could not complete the comeback, falling 70-65.
 
Texas Wesleyan shot 36 percent from the field, while their opponent shot an efficient 49 percent from the field. Wesleyan outscored Texas Woman's 21-9 on points off turnovers, and 13-10 on second chance points. The Pioneers outscored the Rams in the paint 30-26 and bench points 36-21.
 
Threats led the Lady Rams with 18 points, while adding eight rebounds. Fields notched 13 points on the night. Caitlin Boal tallied 13 points. Onyesonam Nolisa notched eight points and seven boards.
 
The Lady Rams will come home to play Oklahoma City University in the conference opener on Thursday, December 4. There will be free admission with if you come with a canned food item as we participate in the SAC Gives Back campaign to help feed people in need. Tip-off is set for 6:00 pm.
