Rams Take Homecoming Win over No. 21 SGU

FORT WORTH, TX:  The Texas Wesleyan University men's basketball team (14-12, 7-9 SAC) took a convincing 85-68 win over 21st ranked St. Gregory's University (18-6, 9-6 SAC) in their Homecoming game at the Sid Richardson Center on Saturday.
 
The Rams ran away from the Cavaliers early and did a terrific job on the Sooner Athletic Conference's leading scorer, holding SGU's Marty Wilkerson to just four points.
 
Texas Wesleyan tossed in five three-pointers while racing out to a 23-8 advantage with 12:44 to play in the first half.  The Rams held the Cavs at arm's length from there on their way to a 38-27 halftime lead.
 
The Cavaliers started the second half with seven unanswered points.  SGU trailed by just five, 50-45, midway through the period, when the Rams came to life once again.  A three from Deonte Jones sparked a 17-7 run that featured four more three-pointers.  SGU's Richard Shields was on his way to a fast break layup, but his shot was blocked by Hasani Sumbry.  On the other end, Kenny Rhymes buried a three.  Bruce Jacobs followed that with a tip-in and a dunk both off of offensive rebounds.  When the smoke cleared, the Rams were firmly in charge at 67-52 with 8:10 to play.
 
Two plays later, Jervon Hooks fed Jacobs off glass for a slam that ignited the crowd and put the exclamation point on the win.  Texas Wesleyan went on to lead by as many as 20 (77-57) on their way to the 85-68 victory.
 
For the game, the Rams shot 52.6% from the field while holding the Cavaliers to 47.4%.  SGU could not stop Texas Wesleyan's long range attack.  The Rams hit 14-of-28 (50%) from distance, while the Cavs went 5-of-15 (33%) from beyond the arc.  Texas Wesleyan also dominated the boards 39-27.
 
Rhymes led the Rams with 19 points.  Deonte Jones posted a double-double on 18 points and 10 rebounds while hitting 6-of-10 from downtown.  Dallas Jones added 13 points.  Jacobs finished with 10 points and eight rebounds.  Hooks contributed seven points and nine assists.
 
Wilkerson entered the game averaging an SAC best 22.04 points, but was held to four points on 2-of-15 shooting.  TJ Thornton led the Cavs with 19 points, while Aaron Mazibuko added 11.
 
The Rams will return to action on Thursday, when they travel to Southwestern Christian University.  That game is scheduled for an 8:00 p.m. start in Oklahoma City, OK.
