Lady Rams Crumble Cavaliers At Homecoming

Box Score

FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University women's basketball team (12-13, 7-9 SAC) notched a 66-52 conference win over St. Gregory's University (2-19, 1-14 SAC) at the Sid Richardson Center on Saturday.

The Cavaliers grabbed an early 8-5 lead on a Tori Huff three pointer, and it seemed St. Gregory's found some momentum on the road to start the contest. The Lady Rams squashed that though, and came back to take the lead as Onyesonam Nolisa converted on a drive to the basket for a 9-8 lead.

The Lady Rams held only a slight margin midway through the first half, until a 7-0 rally capped by a pair of Caitlin Boal free throws made it 26-18 ball game. Texas Wesleyan stretched the lead to 31-21 with less than five minutes to go in the first half on a Kayla McCray jumper off the glass. The Cavs cut the lead before half though, and Wesleyan took a 37-32 advantage at the break.

Another McCray layup gave the Lady Rams a 45-34 cushion in the early goings of the second half, as Texas Wesleyan took their time and attempted quality shots on the offensive side of the court. A Stacy Lee lay-in made it an eight point deficit for St. Gregory's with just under five minutes remaining in the game, but that would be as close as the Cavaliers would get.  ToiEasha Cooper put in a jumper from the baseline for a 63-49 lead, and it was smooth sailing for the Lady Rams from there, taking a 66-52 win.

They Lady Rams held their opponent to only 23 percent shooting from the field, while shooting 43 percent in the same category. The rebound battle was square at 43 apiece, but the Lady Rams enjoyed 11 assists and seven blocks as a team.

Cooper led all players with 18 points, adding a team high eight rebounds in the win. McCray put in 13 points, while Amy Moody tallied 12 points. Takoia Larry posted six points and five boards off the bench in her first game back from injury.

The Lady Rams will look to add to the win column taking on Southwestern Christian University in Oklahoma City, OK on Thursday, February 20. That game set for a 6:00 pm start.
