FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University men's basketball team (13-9) took a 95-75 win over Arlington Baptist College (9-10) in the Sid Richardson Center on Tuesday, on the strength of Kenny Rhymes' 26 points and 13 rebounds, both season-highs.
Arlington Baptist brought their long range game to the SRC. Texas Wesleyan raced out to an easy 20-10 lead, but ABC threw in four three-pointers during a 15-5 run that put the Patriots on top 29-27. The three's continued to fall, and Arlington Baptist led by as many as nine, 43-34, on their way to a 43-37 halftime advantage.
The Rams outshot the Pats 50%-41% in the period, but ABC's 8-of-21 from long range was the difference.
The Rams asserted themselves with an 18-4 run that included four three-pointers from three different players, to lead 55-47 four minutes into the second half. Arlington Baptist weathered the storm and actually led 61-60 midway through the period, but the Rams were just getting warm.
A 15-4 run put the Rams up by double-figures, 75-65. After a three from Raphael Garcia, TWU's
Deonte Jones buried three three's as the Rams closed the game on a 20-7 run.
In the second half, the Rams shot 65% from the field including 69% (9-of-13) from beyond the arc, while holding ABC to 42% from the field and 39% (5-of-13) from distance.
Rhymes added five assists to his second straight double-double effort. His 26 points came on 9-of-12 shooting including 5-of-7 three-point attempts.
Jorge Redmon also notched a double-double with 19 points and 10 assists.
Dallas Jones scored 19 points, while
Deonte Jones finished with 14 in the win.
Garcia led the Patriots with 17 points.
The Rams will return to Sooner Athletic Conference action on Thursday, when they host Northwood University. That game is scheduled for an 8:00 p.m. start in the Sid Richardson Center.
