Wayland Tops TWU in Regular Season Finale

PLAINVIEW, TX:  The Texas Wesleyan University men's basketball team (15-15, 8-12 SAC) suffered a 93-72 loss at Wayland Baptist University (21-9, 12-8 SAC) on Saturday.
 
The Rams could not recover from a very tough shooting performance in the first half.  The Pioneers held the Rams to just 21% from the floor while hitting 51% on their end of the floor.
 
A three from Barry Johnson sparked a 17-0 run that put WBU in command at 29-12.  The lead quickly swelled to 20, 34-14, after another trey from Plamen Hristov.  The Pioneers later closed the first half with a 12-2 run to lead 55-24 at the break.
 
Things improved significantly in the second half, but the damage had been done.  The Rams outshot the Pioneers 46%-41% while outscoring WBU 48-38 in the second half.  However, the Pioneers held off any attempt at a comeback and cruised to the 93-72 win.
 
For the game, the Pioneers shot 47% from the floor while holding the Rams to 33%.  Wayland Baptist also hit 12-of-31 (39%) of their three point attempts while the Rams went just 6-for-26 (23%) from distance.  Texas Wesleyan held a 55-46 rebounding edge, while WBU had the turnover margin at 10-9.
 
Kenny Rhymes led the Rams with 21 points and 11 rebounds.  Jorge Redmon added 15 points, five boards, and four assists, while Dallas Jones posted 10 points.
 
Hristov came off the bench to lead the Pioneers with 21 points on 7-of-10 shooting from long range.  Barry Johnson posted 19 points in the win.
 
The Rams will be the ninth seed in next week's Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament.  The tournament is being hosted by Oklahoma Baptist University.  The top-five seeds receive a bye through Wednesday's first round.  Texas Wesleyan will play eighth seeded Oklahoma Baptist (15-15, 9-11 SAC) in the first round.  Game time is TBA.  This season, the Rams and Bison split a pair of contests with each winning on its home floor.
