MARSHALL, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University women's basketball team (3-1) was narrowly evaded by Wiley College (5-0) in a 59-56 nail-biter on Monday.
The Lady Rams posted a 7-2 run to start the contest, capped by a three-pointer by
Onyesonam Nolisa. The Wildcats responded by taking a 10-2 rally to the end of the first quarter to take a 12-9 lead.
The Lady Rams fought back and
Courtney Chargois threw in a jumper to tie the game at 18-18 with four minutes left in the second quarter.
Delana Lopez hit a two-pointer for a 20-18 lead, but that was short lived as Ty Colquitt hit a three-pointer to give the Wildcats a 23-20 lead at the break.
The two teams battled in the third quarter, as the Wildcats got out to 28-24 advantage before the Lady Rams regained the lead. Chargois posted a two-pointer to give Wesleyan a 31-30 edge with four minutes remaining. Wiley clawed their way back into the game and posted a 39-37 lead heading into the final frame.
Wiley College charged out to a 47-38 lead in the fourth quarter, firmly taking advantage of the game in the final minutes. Wesleyan pushed back with a 10-3 run capped by a
Leila Jdily-Ezzad jumper with four minutes remaining, cutting the lead to 50-48. Jdily-Ezzad sprinted down the floor and hit another bucket to make it a one-point, 51-50 deficit before hitting three more points to cap her own 5-0 rally to tie the game at 53 apiece with one minute left. Colquitt answered with a three pointer, forcing TWU to foul to keep time on the clock. Wiley hit their free-throws and defended well enough to hold on to a 59-56 win.
Jdily-Ezzad led the Rams with 16 points. Nolisa posted eight points and 17 boards in the game. Chargois tacked on 11 points in the loss.
Delana Lopez added 10 points.
The Lady Rams will stay on the road and travel to Wichita Falls, TX for a meeting with Midwestern State University on Wednesday, November 18 starting at 7:00 pm.
