STEPHENVILLE, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University women's basketball team (3-2) was defeated 66-54 in an exhibition contest at Tarleton State University (3-1) on Saturday.
The TexAnns ran out to a 14-6 lead in the early going, but the Rams mounted a comeback in the second quarter.
Courtney Chargois and
Leila Jdily-Ezzad combined on a 6-0 run that brought the Rams within a point (28-27) entering the final minute of the half and the Rams trailed by just a bucket (30-28) at the intermission.
Chargois tied the game with the first basket in the second half. From there the game rolled through another tie and six lead changes before Jdily-Ezzad sank a layup to send the game to the fourth quarter with the Rams down by a single point, 45-44.
The TexAnns opened the final stanza with a 10-1 run to put the game away.
For the game, the Rams outshot the TexAnns 43.8%-36.2%. However, Tarleton dominated the glass 42-27. That led to a 16-9 margin in second chance points. Tarleton's bench also outscored the Texas Wesleyan reserves 24-4. Points off of turnovers (26-26) and fast break points (8-8) were both even. The Rams outscored the TexAnns 36-26 in the paint.
Chargois led the Rams with 13 points.
Katelynn Threats added 12 points, and Jdily-Ezzad finished with 11.
Ikpeaku Iwobi led the TexAnns with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Averie Mack added 10 points for Tarleton State.
The Rams will hold their home opener on Monday, when they host East Texas Baptist University. That game is scheduled for a 5:00 p.m. start in the Sid Richardson Center.
Ramblings
- The Rams were 0-3 on from 3-point range on Saturday, marking the first time the team did not make a triple since March 1, 2014 when they went 0-3 from long range against Wayland Baptist.
- East Texas Baptist leads the all-time series with Texas Wesleyan 20-10.
