Wildcats Hand Rams First Loss

MARSHALL, TX:  The Texas Wesleyan University men's basketball team (5-1) suffered its first loss of the season, an 89-82 defeat at Wiley College (5-0) on Monday.
 
In a game that was tight statistically as well as on the scoreboard, the Wildcats shot over 52% from the field and dominated the glass.
 
Both teams were over 50% from the field in the first half, but Wiley got off three more attempts than the Rams and led 45-40 at the break.  In the second half Wiley shot 54.5% (18-33) from the field and again edged the Rams on the scoreboard.
 
For the game Wiley hit at a 52.3% clip (34-65) while the Rams were 26-61 for 47.5%.  Wiley had the edge 44-34 in rebounding.  Turnovers were nearly even with 17 for Wiley and 16 for the Rams.  Both teams scored 18 points at the free throw line.  Texas Wesleyan drained six three-pointers while Wiley hit just three from long range.
 
Dion Rogers led the Rams with 21 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 assists.  Sam Akano added 20 points.  Jerell Ellis finished with 16 points and 6 boards, and Chris Gracela posted 12 points and 6 rebounds.
 
Wiley also put four players in double-figure scoring led by George Page's 25.  Christopher Tawiah notched 14 points and 17 rebounds.  Kevondric Davis scored 16 points, and Cory Jones finished with 15 for the Wildcats.
 
The Rams will return to action at the Westminster Classic in Salt Lake City, UT, this Friday and Saturday.  They will open with Montana Tech University at 4:00 p.m. (MST) on Friday and then play either Westminster College or The Master's College.
 
Ramblings
 
- The Rams lead the all-time series with Wiley College 24-10.  Monday's loss snapped a three-game winning streak against the Wildcats.
 
- The Rams have never faced Montana Tech or The Master's.  They are 1-0 all-time against Westminster: the two teams met at Dillard University's Big Easy Challenge in New Orleans, LA in December of 2011.
 
- The Rams currently have five players averaging double-figure scoring on the season.  Chris Gracela continues to average a double-double with 10.5 points and 10.2 rebounds per game.
