FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University women's basketball team (18-9, 9-6 SAC) pulled out a 67-63 overtime win over Southwestern Christian University (11-16, 7-8 SAC) at the Sid Richardson Center on Thursday.
Amy Easley started Wesleyan on the fight foot with shot from behind the arc. Caitlin Boal put in a layup to grab a 7-5 lead before the Eagles charged back to tie the game at 8-8. A Taylor Estep three-pointer gave Southwestern Christian an 11-8 advantage with 13:54 left in the first half.
The Lady Rams flexed their muscles with a 13-0 rally capped by a Katelynn Threats lay-in to make it a 21-11 Wesleyan lead. The Eagles stayed sharp from downtown and ended the Ram run with two consecutive three-pointers. Southwestern Christian continue to cut into the lead and another triple from Kim Hayes tied the contest at 24-24 before the buzzer sounded to signal the halftime break.
The two teams shot 32 percent from the field in the first half, but the Eagles went 6 for 15 for 40 percent from the three point line to counter balance the Wesleyan attack in the paint and frosty rebounding.
The Lady Rams and Eagles traded the lead to start the second half, until Southwestern Christian found a 43-34 advantage with a 10-1 rally capped by an Andi McGill three-pointer. Easley answered for the Lady Rams by putting in a bucket from downtown, and a Threats jumper cut the SCU lead to 43-42 midway through the second half. The Eagles kept a slight edge on the Rams for over nine minutes of game time, until a clutch Threats layup evened things at 57 apiece. Each team missed a game winner, sending the contest into overtime.
Cheyenne Swoopes knocked down shot from beyond the arc that sparked an 8-0 run capped by a Threats tip-in for a 65-57 lead with 1:19 remaining in the game. The lead was too much for the Eagles to overcome, and Texas Wesleyan escaped a scrappy Southwestern Christian team with a 67-63 OT win.
The Rams shot 41 percent from the field for the game, while SCU shot 32 percent. TWU out rebounded their opponent 61-32. Wesleyan also out-scored the Eagles in the paint 28-17. The lead changed hands 10 times and was tied for 3:52 minutes.
Threats led the Lady Rams with a double-double behind 17 points and 16 rebounds. Onyesonam Nolisa posted a double-double with 10 points and 16 boards. Easley notched 15 points and six assists in the win. Boal had 10 points for Wesleyan.
The Lady Rams will travel to Shawnee, OK for a conference game with Oklahoma Baptist University on Saturday, February 21 starting at 3:00 pm.
