Lady Rams Fall To Lady Bison In SAC Quarterfinal

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK: The Texas Wesleyan University women's basketball team (16-16) ended their season with a 78-64 quarterfinal loss to No. 6 Oklahoma Baptist University (24-4) in the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament at Abe Lemons Arena on Thursday.

There were three point shots a plenty to start the quarterfinal game against the Lady Bison. Seven shots from downtown were put in between the two teams within the first six minutes, including Amy Easley hitting three triples to start to give the Rams a 15-13 advantage. OBU fired back to take a 16-15 lead on a Charity Fowler three-pointer as the two teams went back in forth with the aerial attack.

A Krissy Parker layup kept Wesleyan with a slight 20-18 lead midway through the first half. The Bison found an opening and maintained a narrow edge until Onyesonam Nolisa tied the game at 28-28 with a pair of free throws. Oklahoma Baptist took a 6-0 run capped by Fowler three-pointer to take a 34-28 lead with four minutes left in the half.

Texas Wesleyan charged back, starting with a Carneisha Sims steal that led to Parker getting to the line to put in two free throws. Nolisa tied the game at 36-36 on a pull up jumper from the elbow with 46 second left. The Lady Bison regained the lead, but with five seconds left Parker got a pass from Nolisa and threw in a layup while drawing a foul. She converted on the three-point play to post a 39-38 Wesleyan lead heading into the break.

The Lady Rams continued their efficient shooting efforts, going 48 percent from the field in the first half. OBU shot 38 percent from the field.

The Lady Rams fought to keep a lead in the first minutes of the second half, but a pair Oklahoma Baptist three-pointers allowed the Bison to take a 47-45 lead with 16:17 left in the game. A Parker lay-in cut the lead to 50-49 before the Bison worked an 11-2 rally for a 60-51 advantage.

The Lady Bison got hot from behind the arc, helping them to slowly tilting the game to a 13-point, 70-57 lead. Oklahoma Baptist held a large enough lead late enough in the game to keep a Wesleyan comeback from starting, taking a 78-64 win.

The Lady Rams shot 48 percent from the field for the game, while the Bison shot 36 percent. The difference was Oklahoma Baptist defending the perimeter better and Wesleyan failing to record a bucket from downtown the entire second half. The Lady Bison held a 43-36 rebounding edge and outscored the Rams 16-7 off turnovers.

Nolisa established her presence with 20 points, 12 rebounds, and seven assists. She also added four blocks and a pair of steals in the dominant effort. Parker notched 15 points for the Lady Rams.  Easley posted 13 points and five boards. Katelynn Threats tallied 11 points in the game.

While the record does not show it, the Lady Rams produced an impressive season despite injuries to key players and should be proud of the product they put on the court. Texas Wesleyan will graduate seven seniors. Their leadership and effort has been vital to the women's basketball program.
