Lady Rams Send Seniors Out With Win

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK: The Texas Wesleyan University softball program (17-28) capped the 2015 season with a 4-1 win over Southwestern Christian University (12-33) in the final pool play game of the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament at the Firelake Softball Complex on Friday.

The Lady Rams and Eagles played for pride in the final game of the season for both teams, as the two teams were both eliminated from the tournament with two losses yesterday.

That did not stop SCU from jumping out with a 1-0 run in the top of the first. Jessica Orozco doubled to left center before Lari Willis hit a RBI single to right to take an early lead.

The Lady Rams answered in the bottom half of the inning, starting with an Amber Tucker base hit through the left side. Amber Marlett drew a walk, and a couple of wild pitches scored Tucker. Lauren Gunter walked and sacrificed herself on the base paths to score Marlett to take a 2-1 lead.

TWU added a run in the third after Marlett got the inning started with a double to left center. Gunter moved the lead runner to third with a base knock to left field. Lauren Davis padded the lead with a RBI double that was ripped to the left field wall. That made it a 3-1 Lady Ram advantage.

Samantha Bastien put an exclamation point on the day, bashing a solo home run over the left field fence for a 4-1 lead.

The entire Wesleyan pitching staff contributed in limiting the Eagles to one run on only two hits. Marlett pitched three and a third innings in the win. She gave up one run on two hits, while striking out six and walking one. Amanda Windham (6-11) earned the win and pitched just 1.2 innings, but sat down five in limited action. Lauren Wernet closed the game out and recorded a save with two scoreless innings, did not give up a hit, issued one walk, and one strikeout.

Davis went 2 for 3 with a RBI. Bastien Went 1 for 2 with a home run.

Marlett paced the Rams this season, leading the team with a .394 hitting percentage. She also led the team with seven home runs, 32 RBI, and slugging at .670. She also led the team with seven wins, two shutouts, and 64 strikeouts. Wernet led the team in ERA with 3.94, issuing only 24 walks in 87 innings pitched.

The Lady Rams would like to thank all the support from the Ram community, family, friends and fans, and look forward to seeing you next season.
