Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Rams Crush Crusaders, 3-0

SHREVEPORT, LA: The Texas Wesleyan University men's soccer team (3-0) took a dominating 3-0 win over William Carey University (2-2) at Mayo Field on the beautiful Centenary College of Louisiana on Wednesday.

The Rams came out with a bang, as Alejandro Rey sprinted down the throat of the defense right off the whistle, getting a touch on the ball towards the right side of the baseline to force a corner. Wesleyan got a header from Shaun Miltner, but the Crusaders turned it away to keep the game nil-nil.

The Rams finally got on the board in the 27th minute after an Alejandro Rey corner kick from the left flag that found the head of Brien Avalos who placed the ball in the top right corner of the net for the 1-nil advantage. The Rams kept the pressure on and went into half time by the same score.

The Rams completely suffocated the Crusaders for most of the second half, primarily on the defensive end. William Carey had a few chances, but not anything from in the box or even from mid-range.

Texas Wesleyan struck again in the 77th minute after an absolute gem from Rey was played through the middle of the Crusader defense to Ojouok Otieno who sliced it over the left shoulder of the keeper and in the goal.

The Rams never stopped and it paid off in the 90th minute, when Derek Smith hit a ball that the keeper was able to knock away, but right at the feet of Denis Ushakov who put the ball away easily. That would be the twist of the dagger as Wesleyan left Mayo Field with a 3-0 win.

The Rams got off 15 shots, eight on goal, had seven corner opportunities. Marko Jovanovic (3-0) earned the shutout with five saves. William Carey took 17 shots, but only five on frame, getting two corner kicks in the match. Texas Wesleyan was charged with 15 fouls, while the Crusaders had six.

Texas Wesleyan will celebrate Hometown Heroes night in their home opener with a game against the University of Houston-Victoria. That game is set for Friday, September 11 at 7:00 pm at Martin Field.
