FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University men's soccer team (6-3, 0-1 SAC) suffered a 2-0 loss in their Sooner Athletic Conference opener against Southwestern Christian University (7-3, 1-0 SAC) at Martin Field on Tuesday.
The Rams had several early opportunities but could not finish off a goal. The Eagles got on the board in the 28th minute when a short corner kick ended up with Javier Verdu Sanchez who found Matheus Goviea in the box for a strike.
Marko Jovanovic (6-3) made four of his seven saves in the first half, to keep the Rams within striking distance.
In the 69th minute, however, Jovanovic was whistled for a foul in the box and Lucas Loureiro converted the ensuing penalty kick to push the score to 2-0.
For the game, the Eagles outshot the Rams 19-12 including a 9-3 count in the second half. SCU led 5-4 in corner kicks and had the better of a 17-14 foul count.
The Rams will return to action on Saturday, when they host Wayland Baptist University. That game is scheduled for a 3:00 p.m. start at Martin Field.
Ramblings
- The Rams are now 11-8-1 all-time in SAC play, while the series with SCU is tied 2-2. Wayland Baptist leads the all-time series with Texas Wesleyan 3-2.
- This was the second time this season that the Rams have been shutout.
- Seven saves was one off of the season high for Jovanovic. He made eight saves in a win over St. Thomas and in a loss to the University of the Southwest.
