Big Shot Burton, Lady Rams Sink Pilots in OT

FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University women's basketball team (2-0) squeezed by LSU-Shreveport (0-1) in a 75-67 overtime nail-biter at the Sid Richardson Center on Saturday.

The Pilots worked their way out to an 8-0 lead to start the contest, due in large part by a pair of Courtney Randle three-pointers. The two teams struggled to much going offensively, as the Lady Rams posted an 8-2 run capped by a Breanna Burton jumper to make it 10-8 after the first.

TXWES tied the game at 10-10 to start the second quarter after an Ashlie Bruner layup. The Rams took a 7-0 rally capped on a Katelynn Threats three-point play to gain a 17-13 edge with 6:06 to go in the half. Wesleyan extended that lead to a 24-17 lead at the break.

Falesha Fuller made it an 11-point, 28-17 lead to start the second half, but the Pilots fired back. LSU-S went on a 9-0 run to make it 30-28. Texas Wesleyan kept their opponent at bay and took a 41-38 advantage in the fourth quarter.

The two defenses tightened up to start the fourth, as the Lady Rams tried to slow the LSU-Shreveport attack. The Pilots cut the lead down to 53-52 after a shot from behind the arc, and then took a 58-56 lead with just 12 seconds left on clock. Burton got an open shot with seven seconds left and nailed an ice-cold dagger to keep the Rams alive and force overtime.

Burton was not done though, dropping in a shot from downtown to start a 9-0 rally capped on a Bruner lay-in to make it 67-58. The Pilots never recovered and the Rams continued to dominate overtime extending the lead and posting a 75-67 win.

Texas Wesleyan shot 40 percent from the field, while the Pilots shot 33 percent. LSU-Shreveport won the rebound battle 54-49.

Threats tallied 15 points and 13 boards in a double-double effort. Bailey Broadnax also posted an 18 point, 14 rebound performance. Breanna Burton hit the two biggest shots of the night and ended the night with 15 points. Bruner tacked on 12 points, nine assists, and five boards in the win.

The Lady Rams will play another exhibition contest with East Texas Baptist University on Wednesday, November 9 starting at 6:30 pm in Marshall, TX.
