Lady Rams Charge Past Cavaliers

FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University women's basketball team (16-10, 8-7 SAC) took a decisive 75-59 win from St. Gregory's University (2-20, 0-15 SAC) at the Sid Richardson Center on Thursday.
 
The Lady Rams held the Cavaliers to 26 percent shooting and 16 points in the first half to establish a 21-point lead in a game where they never trailed.
 
TXWES grabbed an 8-2 lead to start the contest, capped on a Falesha Fuller jumper from the elbow. The Rams extended the lead to 17-8 before the quarter came to a close.
 
The Cavaliers cut the lead to five points to start the second quarter, but Texas Wesleyan took up the last four minutes of the half with a 16-0 rally capped by a Nicole Gleason bucket from behind the arc and a 37-16 lead.
 
The Lady Rams shot 46 percent from the floor in the first half, while St. Gregory's went 0-11 from the three point line.
 
SGU started to hit from downtown to start the second half, but TXWES absorbed the uptick in offense and maintained a double digit lead. Katelynn Threats blocked a shot and scored two with a jumper, then tallied a steal with a layup on the other end for a 51-33 advantage. Ashley Washington hit a three ball before the end of the third to make it a 56-37 game.
 
Wesleyan paced the Cavaliers with a 20-point clip for most of the final quarter, on the way to a 75-59 win. The Rams shot 48 percent from the field for the game, while the Cavaliers shot 33 percent.
 
Threats led all players with 25 points and sits at 1,304 points which ranks seventh all-time in program history. Bailey Broadnax threw down 16 points and seven rebounds in the win. Gleason posted 11 points, while Fuller tacked on 10 points. Four Lady Rams finished with five assists.
 
Texas Wesleyan will celebrate senior day on Saturday, February 18 when they take on 13th ranked Wayland Baptist University at 1:00 p.m. at the Sid Richardson Center.
