BETHANY, OK: The Texas Wesleyan University softball team (25-16, 13-9 SAC) completed a season sweep of Southwestern Christian University (11-34, 5-21 SAC) after an 8-2 extra inning comeback win fueled a 9-3 win in game two at SCU Softball Field on Monday.
Scoring was slim in game one, as the Eagles jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning on an Alaura Prenzlow two-run single up the middle to represent the only scores in the first six innings.
The Lady Rams left five runners stranded in scoring position before finally cracking the Eagle defense in the seventh inning.
Shelby Reddington led the inning off with a walk before an error allowed runners at the corners with one away.
Samantha Bastien got a run on the board with a sacrifice RBI groundout and then another run scored on the plat due to a throwing error. The play would erase the SCU lead and tie the game at 2 apiece.
Lauren Wernet retired the side in order in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings, and the Lady Rams wasted no time in breaking the tie in the eighth.
TXWES batted around in a six run, five hit offensive explosion to take a commanding 8-2 lead.
Dani Jackson started the inning by blazing down the line to beat out an infield single to put runner on the corners. A wild pitch allowed both runners to advance while breaking the tie in the process. For good measure, the Rams mounted an onslaught of highly executed small ball.
Bailey Terry scored a run on an infield bunt before
Lauren Gunter moved the runner on a sacrifice bunt.
Kaylee Davenport slapped a shot into left-center for another run.
Demi Dotson singled to the infield to set up a Reddington RBI fielder's choice play. The Rams were not done yet, as
Hannah Tomme followed suit on a RBI liner into left field. With the bases loaded, Jackson was hit by a pitch in her second at bat of the inning to cap the drive and put Texas Wesleyan firmly in control.
Wernet (9-3) kept the Eagles off the board in the bottom of the eighth and ended the game on a strike 'em out, throw 'em out double play to complete the comeback win for the Rams. The junior from West, TX threw 2.2 innings in relief, allowing no runs, just one hit, and one strikeout.
Tomme went 2 for 4 with a RBI and a run scored. Terry went 2 for 5 with a RBI and one run scored.
In game two, Texas Wesleyan started game with a two-run first inning. Jackson used her speed to grab a bunt single before an error allowed her to score on a batted ball by Terry.
Kaylee Davenport added the second run with a RBI single to left field for the 2-0 edge.
Southwestern Christian got a run back in the bottom of the inning, after a walk led to a Prenzlow RBI base hit up the middle, cutting the lead in half.
The Lady Rams added another big inning in the third on a four run, four hit outburst that started with a Terry RBI base knock to right field.
Demi Dotson flexed on a double down the left field line to score Davenport from first, and the inning was capped on a Reddington RBI liner to left for a 6-1 advantage.
Terry drove into a pair on a double to left in the fourth inning to stretch the lead seven runs, The Eagles got one back in the bottom of the inning, but TXWES matched that with a score in the sixth. Prachyl singled and proceeded to steal second and third before Jackson put a ball in play to plate the run and make it a 9-2 game through six innings.
The Eagles could only muster one run in the in the sixth as the Rams paced their way to a 9-3 win.
Paulina Quintana (2-3) notched the win for TXWES. The sophomore from Firestone, CO went 5.2 innings, allowing three run on five hits, gave up three walks, and fanned two.
Terry led the team, going 2 for 4 with three RBI and two runs scored. Prachyl had three steals to top off a 2 for 3 day with three runs scored. Davenport went 2 for 4 with one RBI, while Jackson went 2 for 3 with two runs scored and two stolen bases.
The Lady Rams will wrap up their 8-game road stretch in Chickasha, OK when they take on University of Science & Arts on Thursday, April 27. First pitch scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. start.
