Heavy Hitting Rams Sink Saints, 3-1

SAN ANTONIO, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University volleyball team (9-1) picked up a 3-1(25-15, 19-25, 25-19, 25-21) win over Our Lady of the Lake University (1-4) at Mabee Gym on Friday.
 
TXWES hit .419 in the fourth set to close out a Saints squad who perform very well on their home court. OLLU was 25-1 on their home turf at the start of the match, a record that dates back to 2014.
 
The Saints found a slight lead early in the first set before the Rams let out an 8-0 outburst, capped by Brittni Mohle slam to take a 10-3 lead. Shelby Stinnett followed with kill for a an 8-point lead, before the Rams outscored their opponent 7-3 the rest of the way as Dana Lohrke ended the set with a kill for a 25-15 win.
 
The score was knotted up 10 times to start the second set as OLLU found some fight. The Saints outscored the Rams 6-2 to establish a 20-16 lead that fueled Anyssa Rivera with consecutive kills to win the set, 25-19.
 
Our Lady of the Lake posted a 9-5 lead to start the third frame, but TXWES rallied off six straight for an 11-10 edge, capped on a Tierra Coverson and Brianna Jaramillo block. Coverson struck again, this time with a kill to give the Rams a 21-18 lead. The Saints were plagued with four consecutive errors to give Texas Wesleyan the important third set, 25-19.
 
TXWES kept Our Lady of the Lake at arm's length to start the third, helped along by five Mohle kills and four Stinnett kills. A Jaramillo smash made it match point at 24-16, but the Saints rattled off five straight to cut the lead to 24-21. Unfazed, Stinnett and the Rams took charge to close the set and the match.
 
For the match, the Lady Rams hit .330 with 42 kills and nine blocks as a team. TXWES committed only seven attacking errors, compared to the 27 by the Saints.
 
Stinnett led the way with 13 kills, hitting .367. Mohle went 7-0-16, hitting .438 in the win. Lohrke went eight kills and four block assists. Coverson was perfect from the attacking position, posting six kills on no errors in six attempts, and four block assists.
 
The Lady Rams will make the short trip to the State's capital for a match with Huston-Tillotson University tomorrow, September 9. That match set for a 1:00 p.m. start.
