Marshall, TX - Despite a game-high 18 digs from
Brianna Sitton, the Wiley Wildcats (10-2, 3-2) took down Texas Wesleyan University Volleyball (12-7, 8-2 SAC) in straight sets Tuesday night: 25-16, 25-22, 25-15.
The Lady Rams hit .300 in Set 2 - 13 kills, 4 errors - reversing a sour Set 1 - 4 kills, 10 errors but Wiley caught fire at the right time. The Wildcats hit .316 in Set 2 and .344 in Set 3 to give Texas Wesleyan little opportunity to extend the game.Â
Rams volleyball made a couple of pushes in Set 2 when they were playing their best volleyball of the night. Down 15-7,
Dana Lohrke,
Jasmine Creek,
Sasha Robinson and
Tierra Coverson all had kills to cut the deficit to three, 17-14 (a 7-2 run). The Wildcats built their lead back up to six, 22-16, when the Lady Rams offense came alive again. Robinson assisted on four of five successful attacks for Lohrke, Coverson and Creek. Still, they came up just short.
Lohrke's spike in Set 3 tied the game at six, but Texas Wesleyan never managed to gain a foothold. Lohrke led the offense with 9 kills, followed by Coverson's 7. Robinson was back as the primary passer - 16 assists.Â
The Wildcats' only two losses of the season were against Our Lady of the Lake - who Texas Wesleyan swept - and St. Thomas-Houston, who the Lady Rams fell to, but way back in the season opener. Wiley's had some issues as of late with Texas Wesleyan: the Wildcats had lost four straight to the Rams prior to Tuesday, dating back to 2013.
WHAT'S NEXT
Texas Wesleyan returns to Sooner Athletic Conference play and continues its road stretch with Friday and Saturday games at Langston and Central Christian. The Lady Rams swept both teams to start the front nine of the conference schedule. Before getting on the bus to return home, volleyball will face McPherson Saturday afternoon.Â
