BETHANY, Okla. – The Texas Wesleyan University volleyball team (17-9, 13-3 SAC) picked up a 3-0 (25-13, 25-19, 25-22) win over Southwestern Christian (16-7, 9-7 SAC) at Pickens-Springer Gym on Saturday.
The Lady Rams held strong today behind 14 total blocks to prevail on the road, limiting the Eagles to just .016 hitting.
A much improved Eagles team has challenged all four teams above them in the conference standings, taking each of those team (SAGU, OCU, JBU, TXWES) to five sets. The only team the Eagles were able to beat was Oklahoma City just last week.
The Eagles are enjoying their most productive season six years as the team has improved year-over-year since going 3-31 (1-12 in conference play) in 2012.
In set one, the two teams play a tight one early, but a 6-0 spurt highlighted by a pair of
Chastiny Brown kills gave Texas Wesleyan a 14-8 cushion. The Rams blew the set wide open with a 5-0 rally that featured two
Tierra Coverson swats that beat the defense to make it a 9-point advantage. The team took the final four points capped by another Brown kill.
The Eagles established a 6-1 edge to start the second set, but the lead was quickly erased after four straight SCU attacking errors.
Hannah Altman capped a 5-0 run with a kill to make it a 12-8 Ram lead. SCU powered back to tie the game three times from there, but Texas Wesleyan never lost the lead and a pair of blocks ended the set at 25-19.
The Lady Rams kept the Eagles at arm's length in the third set and Texas Wesleyan continued to flex their muscles behind
Sasha Robinson's five kills and five assists to win 25-22.
Brianna Sitton led all players with 21 digs in the win. She leads the team with 383, which ranks fourth in the conference.
Robinson and Coverson led the attack with nine kills each.
Brenda Pargas organized the offense behind 21 assists. She leads the team in that category with 455.
