BETHANY, OK - Texas Wesleyan University Men's Soccer (5-6, 1-3 SAC) attempted to slow down Southwestern Christian (12-1, 4-0 SAC) Saturday afternoon - and nearly pushed the Eagles to overtime - but ultimately fell 3-2.
Down 3-1,
Mateo Gonzalez connected with
George Battersby to pull the Rams within one, but Texas Wesleyan couldn't manage to get another promising look. The Eagles are the only unbeaten left in the conference and this was the first time anyone had really tested Southwestern Christian. Their other conference victories so far were 9-1 (Bacone), 3-0 (SAGU) and 3-0 (Central Christian).
Texas Wesleyan's first goal came in the 53rd minute on a free kick fromÂ
Claudio Barraza 18-yards out. At the time, it tied the game at one and got Southwestern Christian sweating. Barraza had a shot blocked and another that went wide before the Eagles scored on a corner kick-header into the back of the net. The Eagles first goal was scored off a corner kick. All five of the game's goals were in the second half.
Gaolkeeper
Bastian Blumenberg had nine saves in the contest and now has 26 saves in four SAC battles.
Zion Balogun (leads the team in shots) had two of the Rams six shots on goal, but couldn't find a point. Barraza came in as a substitute in the 32nd minute and injected offense with six different strikes.
RAMBLINGS
Two previous times this season, the Rams have lost back-to-back games. Both times Texas Wesleyan has avoided losing a third, winning their next match. Two other times last season the Rams managed to avoid a three-game slide.
WHAT'S NEXT
Texas Wesleyan attempts to bounce back Tuesday at Southwest Assemblies of God, who also holds a 1-3 record in conference. The Rams are 15-1-2 all times against the Lions. Only four teams have played the Rams more than SAGU in the program's history.
