Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Cameron Irvine

Rams run past Steers, improve to 4-2

FORT WORTH - Transition buckets and plenty of hustle helped Texas Wesleyan Men's Basketball (4-2) to their fourth win of the 2018-2019 season, a 94-83 victory over Texas College.

The Rams followed a 52% shooting performance Saturday against Wiley with a 53.2% shooting night against the Steers, including 65.7% in the first half (23-of-35). That high percentage was due in large part to Julian Torres. All throughout his 25 minutes on the floor, Torres dominated in the post, bullying Steers in the paint. Torres scored 24 points on 12-of-15 shooting, one of the misses followed up by himself for a second-chance bucket. Dare Brazel also had his way, racking up a double-double off the bench - 10 points and 11 rebounds.

The Steers kept things interesting. With 14:13 to go in the second half, Texas College's Jerry Murphy drilled a three to cut the deficit to just five, 66-61. Things fell apart quickly, however, as Texas Wesleyan went on a 22-6 run in the next 6:31. This stretch was Justin Flakes' moment to showcase just how dangerous he can be in the open floor. Flakes hit five shots in the paint - 10 of the team's 60 points in the paint Monday - during the run and finished with a season high 18 points in just 24 minutes.

Texas College hit 13 threes and did its best to keep up with the runnin' Rams, led by Dzifa Moffit's 17 points and five boards, but when the Rams weren't scoring in transition, they were whipping the ball around the perimeter and dumping the ball inside too quickly for a double team to show. The Rams had 23 assists on 41 buckets, led by Juwan Jones' five dishes.

Sam Lorenzen hit four first-half threes for his 12 points and Jones finished with 10. Rob Thomas only hit one shot - a floater in the lane after Texas Wesleyan opened up the lead, but found other ways to contribute with six rebounds and four assists. In total, the Rams got 41 points from its bench. Texas College fell to 0-6.

RAMBLINGS
The 94 points scored was the highest since February 1, when Texas Wesleyan dominated Oklahoma Panhandle State 112-71. Texas College had a hard time containing the Rams in the last meeting, giving up 108, 103 in the 2014 matchup. The Steers haven't beaten the Rams in five years.

Six different players for Texas Wesleyan shot at least 50% from the floor, which has now happened in four-straight games.

WHAT'S NEXT
The Rams will get some rest before hosting Our Lady of the Lake Saturday at 6 p.m. Texas Wesleyan has played seven games in 12 days, although five of the seven were in the comforts of home.
