Lady Rams fall in five in NAIA Opening Round

MCPHERSON, KS - Texas Wesleyan Women's Volleyball (24-11) started strong Saturday taking the first two sets against McPherson College (33-2) but ultimately couldn't pull out a victory in the hopes of returning to Sioux City, Iowa to avenge an early exit from the Round of 32 last season. The final: 25-21, 26-24, 16-25, 22-25, 11-15.

In just Head Coach Jessica Ransom's first season, she continued a four-year tradition of winning at least 24 games. She coached through injuries to key players Dana Lohrke, Brittni Mohle, Sasha Robinson and a couple of losses before the season began. Hannah Altman, Tierra Coverson, Sasha Robinson and Sarah Benitez were main cogs in the consistency the program has shown since 2015, all contributing multiple years of skill on the court in Fort Worth.

Up 7-6 in Set 5, McPherson went on a 4-0 run that proved deadly. The Lady Rams sliced into the deficit, cutting it to 14-11 with an ace from Ashley Curry, but the Bulldogs provided the final point on an attacking error.

Texas Wesleyan owned the first two sets. In Game 1, the Lady Rams erased a 16-12 deficit to tie the set at 16, then came back from a 19-17 mini hole to take a 22-19 advantage, the latter due to a combined four kills and three assists from Mohle and Robinson, with Robinson serving on four of the five points.

In Set 2, the Lady Rams charged back down 13-9, scoring four-straight on back-to-back-to-back Robinson kills. Neither team led by more than a point the rest of the way – with the lead changing four different times before an attack error by Riley Bradbury gave TXWES the two-point edge. Set 2 was the Rams' best offensive set – hitting .262, scoring 20 of their 26 points off of kills.

Robinson ended her Texas Wesleyan career masterfully. Her 20 kills, 21 assists and 18 digs was her fourth triple-double in a row, the eighth of her senior season. Robinson totaled 458 kills, 2,081 assists and 897 digs in her three seasons as a Ram.

Mohle and Jasmine Creek turned in 10 digs, Brenda Pargas assisted on 32 points and 13 digs, Brianna Sitton contributed 19 digs and Curry turned in a season-high 23 digs (led team) – beating her previous season high by 10 – to go along with two of the team's five aces. The Lady Rams out-dug the Bulldogs 99-95 despite the loss. Chastiny Brown added nine kills and four blocks.

The 33-win McPherson squad was led by Lexi Kite's 17 kills and 24 digs.

Lohrke was unable to hit the floor Saturday. She finished with 198 kills in 2018 despite dealing with a nagging injury late in the season.

The season may have not ended in a title, but a season full of adversity, triumph, upsets and elevated play was not unnoticed. This iteration of Texas Wesleyan Volleyball played like a #Ramily.
