Rams dropped by surging No. 2 LSU-Alexandria

FORT WORTH - After scoring 95 points against No. 1 The Masters Thursday afternoon, No. 2 LSU-Alexandria followed up that performance with a 102-77 win over Texas Wesleyan (1-1) Friday afternoon at the Sid Richardson Center.

The Rams had no answer for the Generals hot-shooting offense. LSU-Alexandria made 11-of-27 three-pointers - most of which were heavily contested - and hit 50% of their total shots, 35-of-70. The Generals out-rebounded the Rams 42-31 and got 39 points off the bench, giving LSU-Alexandria a total of seven different players, all who scored between 10 and 17 points.

And then there were the fouls.

There were 54 fouls called in the game, or, one every 44 seconds. In the first half, the whistles averaged one foul every 34 seconds. In total, 64 free throws were shot. The Rams shot 41 of those, just 18 less than they had shot attempts. Free throws were one of the biggest reasons why Texas Wesleyan was able to stay in the game as long as they did, since the shots weren't falling elsewhere, especially deep (2-of-20 from beyond the arc, 0-for-11 in the second half).

Ding Lwal Ding was the main aggressor, attacking the basket and drawing contact to the tune of 12-of-14 shooting from the line. Juwan Jones also found plenty of trips to the charity stripe - 10-of-11. Jones and Julian Torres each finished with a team-high 16 points. Joe Cook-Green came off the bench and in 22 minutes scored 13 points and added seven rebounds. Ding finished with 14 points while Rob Thomas chipped in 12.

The game got away from the Rams in the second half. Trailing just 58-51 with 17:58 remaining, Texas Wesleyan surrendered 21 of the next 27 points in the next 7:13, including nine points from Phillip Ranklin. The Rams shot 1-for-9 during that stretch.

CLASSIC WRAP-UP

After four games in two days, all with four teams in the top 11 of the NAIA Coaches' Poll, No. 2 LSU-Alexandria came out on top, taking down the Rams and No. 1 The Masters. Texas Wesleyan and The Masters each both beat LSU-Shreveport, who could see their No. 7 ranking slip after the 1-2 start to the season.

RAMBLINGS

The 35 free throws made by the Rams were the most free throws made in a game since Texas Wesleyan shot 36-of-41 against Paul Quinn on January 29, 2011. Just a few games later, February 12, 2011, the Rams shot Friday's exact figure (35-of-41) against Wiley.

WHAT'S NEXT

Texas Wesleyan travels to Hawkins, TX on Monday to face Jarvis Christian before returning home for a four-game homestand starting next Thursday night against Arlington Baptist.
