FORT WORTH –
Sasha Robinson's career high 14 kills helped the Texas Wesleyan University volleyball team (9-6, 6-2 SAC) defeat John Brown University (5-6, 5-2 SAC) in five sets (22-25, 25-23, 16-25, 25-16, 15-7) Friday night at the Sid Richardson Center.
Robinson, back in the starting lineup, fueled the Rams comeback after the team fell behind 2-1 in the first three sets. Up 9-6 in Set 4, Robinson contributed four of her 14 kills that helped push the advantage to 19-10. She had two of the final four kills in the fifth set, giving the Lady Rams their second five-set victory in the last three matches.
The fifth set was all about the Rams offense. 12 of Texas Wesleyan's 15 points were kills.
Chastiny Brown had three of her season high 10 kills in the fifth, assisted twice from Robinson and once from
Hannah Altman.
The Lady Rams moved to 6-2 in the Sooner Athletic Conference, dropping John Brown to 5-2. That's good enough for third in the Conference, behind Southwestern Assemblies of God and Oklahoma City.
Jasmine Creek led the defense with 21 digs,
Brianna Sitton contributed 18 and
Hannah Altman had 14, to pair with 16 assists for her sixth double-double of the season.
Brenda Pargas led the team with 19 assists. After Robinson started the game as the primary setter, head coach
Jessica Ransom elected to go back to an old rotation of Pargas and Altman contributing as tandem passers, while moving Robinson to the outside as a primary hitter. It worked, after failing to secure a 14-8 lead in Set 1 as attacking errors got less and less throughout the night – eight in Set 2, seven in Set 3, four in Set 4 and just one in Set 5.
Three Lady Rams each posted a pair of aces: Altman, Pargas and Sara Benitez.
Runs tested Texas Wesleyan in their two set losses, otherwise it might have been a Rams' sweep. John Brown Libero Jenna Lowery commanded a 7-0 run in Set 1 that took a Rams 15-11 advantage into an 18-15 deficit and Bayli Reagan was at the helm of 12 straight points in the third frame, giving John Brown a 21-13 cushion.
RAMBLINGS:
Sunny Clark, who had one ace, has recorded an ace in her last 11 games. Her 20 service aces is tops in the SAC. Sitton's 306 digs is also first in the conference.
WHAT'S NEXT:
A grueling six game road stretch before the Lady Rams next home match on Friday October 12 against Oklahoma Panhandle State. The six road tests include three conference road games in Oklahoma and one in Kansas plus non-conference tilts against Wiley College and McPherson College. McPhearson comes just four hours after a conference game against Central Christian, as the two colleges share the same town.
