Rams top dog in comeback over Steers

FORT WORTH - In a flurry of yellow cards, late-game goals and a fight to the finish, Texas Wesleyan defeated Texas College 3-2 in a hotly-contested game on a sticky Wednesday night at Martin Field.

The action got serious in the final 10 minutes. Down 2-1, the Rams got a goal in the 81st minute from Diego Alvarez to tie the game. Clearly, both teams wanted this one and would do just about anything to get it.

Tempers flared in the 84th minute, after a Steer kicked the ball away off a Wesleyan set piece, which they were awarded because of a foul, earning a yellow card on Killian Pallone. In the 85th minute, four yellow cards were awarded - two to each team - as the intensity was ratcheting up.

In the melee, Alvarez was awarded  a penalty kick - which he drilled into the left corner giving Wesleyan the lead. Alvarez, a freshman transfer from Jacksonville College, now leads the Rams in goals this season with five, scoring in four of the team's five outputs. It's the seventh time in nine wins that Wesleyan has come back down a goal in the second half to win.

The 87th minute saw a stoppage for a stray dog that had run onto the field on Wesleyan's attacking side. The dog was one of the few not carded in the game. Tempers flared one last time post game, but the two sides ended the night shaking hands and showing sportsmanship, proving what really matters most in competition.

Stats across the board were dead even, as Texas College and Texas Wesleyan managed 14 and 13 shots, respectively. But the Rams got five on goal, while the Steers two goals were their only legitimate opportunities. In the 6th minute, George Battersby knocked one in off a well-hit ball off a set piece from Keagan da Silva, who gave plenty of his teammates opportunities to score off set pieces throughout the night, taking full advantage of Texas College's 13 fouls (the Rams were whistled for 12).

Jahvain Russell and Ojuok Otieno, from Jamaica and Kenya, respectively, played some stellar defense, including a key sliding tackle by Otieno in the 39th minute to prevent the Steers from tying things. Texas College eventually got their way in the 39th minute, and later took the lead in the 67th.

RAMBLINGS:
The last time a freshman led the Rams in goals scored in a season was Leo Cubrilo in 2007. He scored seven goals that year. Wesleyan's second-best goal-scorer in 2018 - Claudio Barraza (three) - is also a freshman.

WHAT'S NEXT:
Wesleyan will head southeast for a Sunday tilt against the University of Houston-Victoria at 3:30 p.m. Houston-Victoria has had a winning record six-straight seasons, including an 11-3 record last season. While the two teams did not meet last season, Houston-Victoria did defeat Texas College in 2017, 2-0.
