BETHANY, OK - Texas Wesleyan Men's Basketball (9-10, 4-7 SAC) used 26 points off the bench and a 43-point second half to lift the Rams past Southwestern Christian (11-7, 6-4 SAC) 66-59 Saturday afternoon in Oklahoma.
Freshman
Peyton Sallee got his second 20-point game of the season, bringing his double-digit scoring streak to five games. He hit 4-of-9 from deep and hit both of his shots inside the arc and was instrumental in lighting the first offensive fire of the day.
After a sluggish first half from both squads (Southwestern Christian led 24-23 at halftime) Sallee hit two threes and
Diing Lwal Diing put in two free throws on an 8-0 run between the 15:34 and 14:13 marks of the second half, turning a 29-28 deficit into a 36-29 lead. Down 39-31, the Eagles went on a 10-0 run to reclaim the advantage before
Juwan Jones nailed a three to flip the script.
With the Rams down 52-49, it was
Joe Cook-Green's turn to make an impact. Green scored the next seven points including his second made three-pointer to give the Rams a 56-53 edge with 2:55 remaining. Sallee scored the next five points to put TXWES up six, 61-55, and then the Rams hit 5-of-6 free throws down the stretch, reversing a stat trend that has plagued the team in recent losses.Â
Cook-Green turned in a season-high 14 points and
Juwan Jones added 12 as the Rams bench out-did the Eagles bench 26-24. Jones added three assists, three rebounds and two steals while Cook-Green chipped in three boards and hit all four of his free throws.Â
Rob Thomas hauled in a career-high 10 rebounds, helping the Rams edge the Eagles on the glass 32-29. Thomas had six points and two assists.
Dare Brazeal scored seven points and Diing found six points and four boards.
After shooting just 1-of-9 from long range in the first 20 minutes, Texas Wesleyan swished 7-of-14 from downtown in the second half including Green's 2-for-2 clutch buckets - the first time Cook-Green has hit multiple threes in a game this season and shot the ball over 50 percent from long range.
BETHANY OFF THEIR BACK
After losing 79-78 in Bethany last season, the Rams earned a win in the Eagles gym for the first time since December 6, 2014. While the victory doesn't move the Rams up the standings much, it gives the team a huge confidence booster three games back of third place in the conference standings with a whole second-half of conference schedule still to play.
HALFWAY LEADERS
At the halfway point of the conference season,
Juwan Jones remains the team's active leading scorer at 13.5 ppg, but
Sam Lorenzen (9.6), Lwal Diing (9.3) and Salle (8.3) continue to rise in support. Brazeal is the team's top rebounder (5.5), while Thomas' 60 assists and 25 steals leads both catagories. The Rams are 28th in the country in three-point shooting percentage (36.5 percent)
WHAT'S NEXT
Texas Wesleyan will have two games on the road next week - at John Brown on Thursday and at Bacone on Saturday. Tip-offs are at 8 and 4 p.m., respectively.
