Freshman phenom's big night propels Lady Rams into second place

FORT WORTH, TX - After getting swept earlier this season in John Brown's building, Texas Wesleyan Volleyball (16-6, 11-2 SAC) earned a little payback Friday night at the Sid Richardson Center with a 25-18, 25-17, 25-19 victory over the Golden Eagles (19-6, 10-3 SAC).

The victory launched the Lady Rams into sole possession of second place in the conference and helped split the season series with JBU. Freshman outside hitter Arianna Alvarado recorded 10 kills and 0 attacking errors, the second time this season she's had at least 10 kills and no errors in a match. The last player to have two double-digit kill games in a season, without an attacking error, totaling 23 kills or more was Brittney Person who had a combined 31 kills and 0 attacking errors in two games during the 2007 season.

Alvarado and Chastiny Brown, who had two games last season that totaled 21 kills and 0 attacking errors, now are tied for the team lead in kills after Friday and Brown's eight contributions to the offense.

The Rams turned a key stat around Friday - blocks. John Brown came into the contest leading the conference in blocks (40th in the country) but Texas Wesleyan out-blocked the Golden Eagles 7-2. It was the least amount of blocks for JBU this season and since the first game of 2018. Sydney Charlton had half of them with 3.5.

In Set 1, the Lady Rams held a five-point lead, 11-6, prompting a Golden Eagle timeout. Much of the deficit could be contributed to the three-straight service errors John Brown committed to start the game, in part due to the raucous crowd of football players that flooded the building to show their support on Dig Pink Night and for the marquee matchup. The Golden Eagles tied the set at 11, but the Lady Rams never surrendered the lead.

The next set saw JBU jump out to a 12-7 advantage, this time prompting a Texas Wesleyan time out. But not only did John Brown surrender their five point advantage, the visiting squad was crushed down the stretch, with TXWES going on a 10-4 run to take the lead, then a 8-1 run to take a 2-0 edge.

After the Golden Eagles took a 15-12 lead in Set 2, JBU scored consecutive points only four other times, only once after Jessica Ransom's Set 3 timeout with TXWES up 13-12.

John Brown's top attacker this season, Jessica Schultz, hit -.300 with four kills and five attacking errors, finishing with a negative hitting percentage for the first time since October 12, 2018.

Morgan Burns provided 17 assists, getting the nod Friday over usual started Branda Pargas, who hauled in 13 assists, eight digs and two kills off the bench. Brianna Sitton, while she didn't start, provided a huge spark plug early and often for the Lady Rams, even if the box score only shows 10 digs. She seemed to be in the right place at the right time most of the night, her first double-digit dig game since the sweep of Southwestern Assemblies of God on September 17.

Madison Lopez led the defense with 19 digs and four different players supplied service aces, led by Pargas' two.

Texas Wesleyan goes on the road for a rematch against Oklahoma City next Friday. The No. 24 Stars are 22-1 and unbeaten in conference play.
