FORT WORTH, TX - Tuesday night at freezing Martin Field, the seventh seed in the Sooner Athletic Conference Wayland Baptist, proved it wasn't a fluke. After the Pioneers upset the No. 2 seed John Brown on penalty kicks 4-2 after a 1-1 draw last week, Wayland Baptist came to Fort Worth and shocked the Lady Rams 1-0.
The difference maker came in the 50th minute, off a cross from Pioneer striker Taylor Moore. Moore's cross crept all the way to the back post where it was headed in by Megan Attenborough. It was a decisive header that proved Texas Wesleyan's worst fears: even though John Brown had been shockingly eliminated the week before, it still felt like they were out on the field.
The Pioneers kept possession of the ball roughly 70 percent of the game, up to 80 percent in the second half out-shooting TXWES 16-3. Wayland's no-fear attack kept reigning NAIA Defensive Player of the Week
Christy Zwart busy, calling her into work 14 times to keep the Rams within striking distance, a new career high in saves in her last game in a Texas Wesleyan uniform.
Savanna Barron showed the heart of a warrior, coming back in the second half after a rib injury was taking its toll.
Danielle Trought has been banged up, but came in the final 18 minutes of the game to give the Rams life.
Jordan Gilbert played arguably her best game of the season, staying physical with Wayland's midfielders, thwarting a number of potential attacks through the middle. Her facilitation of passes to the wings defensively to help set up attacks for
Taylor Ross,
Tameir Grosvenor, Barron and others were on point.
But the good looks never came. Grosvenor got off a couple of nice looks in the second half, but nothing like the two looks she received in the 8th minute when a shot skid left and a firing from just a few yards in the 26th minute that went wide right. The holder of the single-season goals scored and career goals scored records finished with seven of the team's ten looks, with three on goal.
Unlike the meeting with Wayland Baptist on Senior Day, when the majority of the Pioneers shots never stood a chance, shots cranked out from 25, 30 yards out were forcing Zwart to make a play keeping the pressure at a very high level.
The top seed in the tournament, the ninth-ranked team in the nation - University of Science and Arts-Oklahoma - annihilated Mid-America Christian Tuesday night 7-0 in that semifinal bout and will host Wayland in the final, Friday. It will be a true David vs. Goliath matchup as the Pioneers try to pull of their first conference tournament victory in the program's 19-year history. For the Lady Rams, a trip back to the national tournament will have to wait another year.
