OKLAHOMA CITY, OK - Texas Wesleyan Volleyball (24-7) will play for a SAC Championship tomorrow at 12 p.m. in a rematch of the 2017 and 2018 final vs. Oklahoma City (32-1) after taking out John Brown (26-8) in Friday afternoon's semifinal - 24-26, 25-17, 25-18, 25-23. TXWES is seeking its first Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament championship.
The Lady Rams asserted dominance in the second set against the Golden Eagles, hitting .279. TXWES tallied 106 digs in the four sets.Â
Texas Wesleyan's balanced attack helped fuel the victory.
Arianna Alvarado, just named SAC Freshman of the Year,
Sydney Charlton and
Brittni Mohle all notched double-digit kills: Alvarado and Charlton had 11, Mohle had 10. For Mohle, it tied a season high, the most kills she's had since August 24. The senior earned a season-high 38 attacks and helped the Rams pull away in Set 2. Up 17-13, Mohle registered back-to-back-to-back kills, all assisted by
Brianna Sitton. It gave the Lady Rams the largest lead of the day by any team at the time and TXWES never looked back.Â
John Brown only led three other times in the match - only one was significant. In Set 4, the Golden Eagles held a 22-21 advantage before committing costly service and ball-handling errors to cough the lead back to the Lady Rams.
Veronika Webb finished off third-seeded JBU with a kill.
A defensive contest, Texas Wesleyan led in blocks, 12-7. The 12 successful blocks were second-most in 2019 and flipped the script on a Golden Eagles squad that ranked second in the SAC in blocks during the regular season (the Rams ranked sixth). Webb earned 4.5 of the 12 rejections, while Charlton collected 3.5 swat-downs.
Brenda Pargas tallied 25 assists and
Madison Lopez had 28 digs. Five players in total had double-digit digs, including a season high 17 digs from Pargas and 13 from
Morgan Burns.
Tatemn Brown added 10 digs, including one of the best plays of the game, a diving effort down the stretch that eventually turned into points.
The Oklahoma City Stars are the 3x SAC Tournament Champions, last defeated in the 2015 final at Wayland Baptist. The Stars are one of only four teams in the NAIA with one loss (no team is undefeated). Only Indiana Wesleyan has more wins (33).
