FORT WORTH, TX - Texas Wesleyan Women's Basketball (3-1) out-scored Huston-Tillotson (3-2) 30-12 in the fourth quarter to run away with a 77-60 victory over the visiting Rams.
After HTU grabbed the lead with five three-pointers in the third frame, TXWES ignited as the squad has often done this non-conference season.
Nicole Gleason hit back-to-back-to-back buckets to start the frame, including a three that stretched Texas Wesleyan's advantage to four, 56-52.
Hailee Walls, who was cold early (1-for-6) was a sharp-shooter down the stretch, hitting a trey to stretch the lead to nine, 65-56 and then nailed a dagger just 2:17 later to cap a 10-0 run during that period.
Gleason earned her second-straight double-double with 19 points and 10 boards. She only had one double-digit rebounding effort her first three reasons out on the perimeter. Gleason also contributed a team-high five steals.
Texas Wesleyan as a team owned the boards. TXWES entered the competition 16th in the NAIA in defensive rebounds per game (31.0) and earned 25 more Tuesday, but the 14 offensive rebounds that turned into 16 second-chance points was the story within the paint - Huston-Tillotson had zero second-chance points. The 60-point effort for HTU was the club's lowest scoring output in a loss since the 60 scored against LSU-Shreveport February 16 of last season.
For the fifth time in four games (not including exhibitions), the Lady Rams scored at least 25 in a quarter. The 30-point third were the most points scored in a quarter since TXWES scored 32 points against Bacone November 29, 2018.
Evie Whorley found her rhythm in the offense to contribute 12 points, eight rebounds, three steals and two assists.
Destiney Winkfield, the team's leading scorer through three games in 2019 scored seven points but had a team-leading four assists, two rebounds and two steals. She also had one handle late in the fourth quarter against a hapless defender that got the crowd on its feet one last time before the buzzer.
Walls finished with 12 off the bench, hitting 3-of-4 beyond the arc.
Chrystal Ngawuchu knocked in eight points to go with eight rebounds.
TXWESÂ starts Sooner Athletic Conference play Saturday at John Brown. The Golden Eagles are 2-4 and sliding on a three-game losing streak. John Brown did beat Paul Quinn by 20, the only common opponent to the Lady Rams (Texas Wesleyan beat Paul Quinn by 13). Last season, the Lady Rams beat the Golden Eagles twice, each meeting by eight points.
